The Things They Carried - Tim O’Brien

Unabridged
They carried malaria tablets, love letters, 28-pound mine detectors, dope, illustrated bibles, each other. And if they made it home alive, they carried unrelenting images of a nightmarish war that history is only beginning to absorb. Since its first publication, The Things They Carried has become an unparalleled Vietnam testament, a classic work of American literature, and a profound study of men at war that illuminates the capacity, and the limits, of the human heart and soul.

this is by far the best autobiographical war book i ever read. i liked tobias wolffs “in pharaohs army” a lot, but this was more intense and unique in so many ways. the chapter where he relates the life of a metafictional friend of his platoon who is returning home to his town in the midwest is a brilliant description of post-war alienation.
and the best of it all: it’s read by brian cranston. mr “heisenburg” himself, walter f-ing white. cranston takes this to a new level of audiobook experience.

Great writing and great story well told. You feel for the ordinary soldier, neglected, abused and no idea why he was risking his life.
