In novels such as Chasm City and Revelation Space, Alastair Reynolds established himself as an indisputable master of the far-flung intergalactic epic. Reynolds brings that same deceptively effortless mastery to the shorter fictional forms, a fact that Troika, his elegant, compulsively listenable new novella, amply demonstrates.
Troika tells the story of men and women confronting an enigma known as the Matryoshka, a vast alien construct whose periodic appearances have generated terror, wonder, and endless debate. During its third “apparition” in a remote corner of the galaxy, a trio of Russian cosmonauts approach this enigma and attempt to penetrate its mysteries. What they discover - and what they endure in the process - forms the centerpiece of an enthralling, constantly surprising narrative.
Troika is at once a wholly original account of First Contact and a meditation on time, history, and the essentially fluid nature of identity itself. Suspenseful, erudite, and gracefully written, it is a significant accomplishment in its own right and a welcome addition to a remarkable body of work.

A goodreads review:
An engrossing science fiction story with enough smarts in it to make you think a little bit. It’s a diversion with a kick to it.
The story is told in two interwoven narratives, one of a mission to a mysterious and very large object, the “Matryoshka”, that appears in Earth’s solar system without warning and without communication. That story is told as a recollection by the main character, Dimitri Ivanov, who also tells his own story, in present tense, now that he has returned to Earth from that mission.
As in other of his writings, the author, Alastair Reynolds, brings a darker, pessimistic feel to the story. The Matryoshka isn’t just an unannounced visitor — it has a message for us, and that message is unsettling to the powers that be. I’m not giving away anything here — that much is apparent from the beginning. But Reynolds has some surprises in the plot twists that make the story more than just another dystopian science fiction story.

Thank you so much for this. What a treat.

Another Goodreads review:
=========
This terrific novella reminded me of a 21st century cross between Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke and Rogue Moon by Algis Budrys. First, you have the huge mysterious object that enters into our solar system, which no one has done better than Clarke in the first Rama book (IMHO).

I’ve yet to read Trioka, but will. However if you’re not already acquainted with Arthur C. Clarke’s Rendezvous with Rama I’d urge you to check it out. How to write a great SciFi tale in just 100 pages.

Ya, Rama. :D :D :D …and if you like Rama, Eon by Greg Bear.

Very highly recommend. Great narrator and and even greater mysteriously sombre plotline. I was hooked from the outset.

This is an utterly fantastic novella. Dark and foreboding, fascinating and intelligent in equal measure.
The narrator is perfect also.
