From the best-selling author of The Silk Roads comes an updated, timely, and visionary book about the dramatic and profound changes our world is undergoing right now - as seen from the perspective of the rising powers of the East.
“All roads used to lead to Rome. Today they lead to Beijing.” So argues Peter Frankopan in this revelatory new book.
In the age of Brexit and Trump, the West is buffeted by the tides of isolationism and fragmentation. Yet to the East, this is a moment of optimism as a new network of relationships takes shape along the ancient trade routes. In The New Silk Roads, Peter Frankopan takes us on an eye-opening journey through the region, from China’s breathtaking infrastructure investments to the flood of trade deals among Central Asian republics to the growing rapprochement between Turkey and Russia. This important book asks us to put aside our preconceptions and see the world from a new - and ultimately hopeful - perspective.

hopeful? Climate change is in runaway mode & the hurt it’s unleashed so far is nothing compared to what’s baked in & the humans pile on more everyday. By its self it could extinct the humans this century. Only CC is not by it’s self. Bio diversity loss, habitat destruction & an atrociously polluted & acidified ocean are also existential threats - these are predicaments - no solutions. In addition, humans have tons of serious problems. Unlike predicaments, problems can be managed or solved, but there’s no effort on those either.
I’ve enjoyed a few Frankopan books, like the one on the original silk roads, but I’ll be skipping this one since more than at any other time in human history hope is for ignorant fools. I wish I was ignorant, but once you become aware, I’m 35 years of studying aware, you can’t go back. I gave up in 2012(point of no return). Inertia is an awesome force & we went to far. Hoping won’t change the laws of physics, nor will shooting the messenger;)
I don’t blame or judge. Humans were/are doing what all life forms do, which is everything within their abilities to give themselves the best chance of surviving & reproducing.
