I like the thought things will improve and dialogue wins the day. However the converse this is cyclic and partisanship always rears it’s head …

History offers innumerable examples of darkness. Individuals like Lincoln, King and Bonhoeffer are exemplars of something greater, but the operation and influence of institutions and corporate bodies are almost always inimical to the human person.

This book is naive, in my opinion. It puts forward a belief in the long since disproven concept that all people are equal in the eyes of the law.
The system is set up that unless you have access to large amounts of money in order to mount a proper defense, you face a far greater penalty than the originally faced. It is as if the system says, “how dare you challenge us.”

All such systems are dehumanising. The ideal is that Justice is open to all, but the structural barriers and obstacles make it practically impossible to achieve. In Ireland, you have to be very poor or very rich to access the courts, then you have the “excluded middle”, which is most of the population. They can’t afford to go to law to vindicate their reputation in a defamation case. Or to seek any other remedy.
It’s as if the individual, or the human factor, is essentially designed out of the system. Institutions do not recognise or acknowledge the full human person. We let it go because that seems to be the way the world works, so it can’t be changed. Institutions crush individuals.
