Hitler, Stalin, and Mao ruled through violence, fear, and ideology. But in recent decades, a new breed of media-savvy strongmen has been redesigning authoritarian rule for a more sophisticated, globally connected world.
In place of overt mass repression, rulers such as Vladimir Putin, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Viktor Orbán control their citizens by distorting information and simulating democratic procedures. Like spin doctors in democracies, they spin the news to engineer support.
Uncovering this new brand of authoritarianism, Sergei Guriev and Daniel Treisman explain the rise of such “spin dictators”, describing how they emerge and operate, the new threats they pose, and how democracies should respond.
‘Spin Dictators’ traces how leaders such as Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew and Peru’s Alberto Fujimori pioneered less violent, more covert, and more effective methods of monopolizing power. They cultivated an image of competence, concealed censorship, and used democratic institutions to undermine democracy, all while increasing international engagement for financial and reputational benefits.
The book reveals why most of today’s authoritarians are spin dictators - and how they differ from the remaining “fear dictators” such as Kim Jong-un and Bashar al-Assad, as well as from masters of high-tech repression like Xi Jinping.

Looks good

This book should be called “The Othering of Evil”, since it seems to be all about projecting bad governance onto The Other, i.e. non-western cultures.

@Thamus — There is plenty of home grown evil.
Viktor Orbán is Western. And so is Trump, who aspires to this category and praises Orbán and Putin.

More leftist trippe. Who publishes this crap?

@lakealex07. Yeah! Spin Doctors don’t exist. Politicians are truthful, never self-serving and put the good of the humanity before country and self. I too live in the same utopia as lakealex, Whoops, No I don’t, that was just a dream. I live in the real world full of corrupt governments, politicians and companies.
Hate to burst your bubble lakealex. But spin doctors are real, they are not a left wing fiction out to poison the minds of the Right Wing Nazi Elite. Now take a calming breath, and remember its the red pill or the blue pill.
It’s a choice. Back to your dream like state with fluffy clouds and smiling politicians handing out money. Or reality, see a politician and grab hold of your wallet as tight as you can.

Whoops sorry! - akealex07 Who prints this?
Princeton University Press. (Ask an adult to teach you how to use Google)
And Trippe - is an antiquated word no longer in current use meaning trip.
I’d explain leftist; however, it has nothing to do with the book, as it’s apolitical
- Damn! -
“Apolitical” is a word you need to look up after mummy or daddy has taught you how to use Google.
THANKS FOR THE UPLOAD Popty_Ping. Excellent as always.
