Conspiracy theorists do not wear tin-foil hats (for the most part). They are not just a few kooks lurking on the paranoid fringes of society with bizarre ideas about shape-shifting reptilian aliens running society in secret. They walk among us. They are us.
Everyone loves a good conspiracy. Yet conspiracy theories are not a recent invention. And they are not always a harmless curiosity. In Suspicious Minds, Rob Brotherton explores the history and consequences of conspiracism, and delves into the research that offers insights into why so many of us are drawn to implausible, unproven and unproveable conspiracy theories. They resonate with some of our brain’s built-in quirks and foibles, and tap into some of our deepest desires, fears, and assumptions about the world.
The fascinating and often surprising psychology of conspiracy theories tells us a lot - not just why we are drawn to theories about sinister schemes, but about how our minds are wired and, indeed, why we believe anything at all. Conspiracy theories are not some psychological aberration - they’re a predictable product of how brains work. This book will tell you why, and what it means.

The difference between most conspiracy theories and the truth, is about 1-3 years.

How smart is a person who can only hurl insults?

We believe in them for precisely the same reasons the police do when putting away criminals. They gather the evidence, look for motives, ask lots of questions and eliminate multiple parties before coming to logical conclusions.

People believe conspiracy theories because it is easier to follow the herd than to do actual research.
Whether it be the Templars, the Albigensians, Flat Earth, the Birther movement, or anti-Vaxxers …. the core of conspiracist thinking is to believe what is easiest … not what has nasty evidence on its side.

You’d think if debunking culture had convincing arguments they wouldn’t need so many books, but quantity is blatantly masking quality.

The true unhinged conspiracy theorists are the mentally addled kind that believe in things like rat poison in the tap water being good for you.. I can believe that flying elvis controls the planet and that is by comparison almost completely harmless, compared to the typical statist conspiracy theorists that kill, maim and destroy their lives. Cancer, terminal illness, divorce, lawfare, an endless arena of consequences for the adult children who want to play with the fire of living without common sense.

love it or hate it, it’s interesting to hear conspiracy theories.
you can laugh at them or you can deny them out of hand.
keep an “open mind” and do your own critical thinking
