What’s good free software for converting aax files? I won’t use InAudible, the archive I found on github has malware (no other “free” software I’ve scanned triggered my AVs alert, so it’s most likely NOT a false positive)

For your own audible library “libation”app. As it will also do Audible Rentals not just purchased files.
It also builds a library of what it rips and has a full gui version so you see jpgs of the files as well.
As its self-contained theres no installer, download zip, extract zip click the Lib.EXE and it runs. You can put the folder any were.
When you find the Correct download location there is no false flag on the PC version of inaudible.
When your downloading the file any way to transfer to another device inaudible is still used.

Actually got it figured out, it seems. Just need to figure out how to get the sample url.

For sample url, you could search through the inspect menus after pressing ctrl+shift+I or paste the audible book page’s url into an audio sample finder website.
