A long time ago, I was fortunate enough to have an English teacher who pointed out to me that the nonsense story about Magwitch in Great Expectations tells us that Charles Dickens knew nothing about swimming, and could rely on an audience as ignorant as he was.
On the other hand, both Byron and Marlowe were clearly familiar with the activity.
I’ve been fascinated with swimming as a cultural epiphenomenon ever since.
I shall enjoy this title.
