Book Description
===================
What is the impact of surveillance capitalism on our right to free
speech? The Internet once promised to be a place of extraordinary
freedom beyond the control of money or politics, but today
corporations and platforms exercise more control over our ability to
access information and share knowledge to a greater extent than any
state. From the online calls to arms in the thick of the Arab Spring
to the contemporary front line of misinformation, Jillian York charts
the war over our digital rights. In Silicon Values, leading campaigner
Jillian York looks at how our rights have become increasingly
undermined by the major corporations’ desire to harvest our personal
data and turn it into profit. She also looks at how governments have
used the same technology to monitor citizens and threatened our
ability to communicate. As a result our daily lives, and private
thoughts, are being policed in an unprecedented manner. Who decides
the difference between political debate and hate speech? How does this
impact on our identity, our ability to create communities and to
protest? Who regulates the censors? In response to this threat to our
democracy, York proposes a user-powered movement against the platforms
that demands change and a new form of ownership over our own data.

This is a problem that is absolutely killing us and so far I haven’t heard any good solutions. I hope there are some in this book.

Nothing has changed aside from it being online.
People just view social media sites as a public space when it’s always been a private sector space.
You can say anything you like in public park but any private institution can regulate what you say even if it’s open to the general public. If you went into a bar 50 years ago and owner disagreed with what you were say or how you looked they could literally toss you out.
Today people are dramatically mischaracterize how it was even in the last 30-50 years and not properly qualifying what was wide open and what was not.

ccreader, your analogy falls flat on many aspects, but here is just one. In a bar, when someone was being disruptive or offensive, it directly impacted other patrons, who were left with only the choice of trying to ignore it or leaving. (bad experience or no experience). In the social media space, everyone has the choice to not read or view things. They can even block or ignore users. The deplatforming of someone who offends some people; people who can choose to ignore that person, not only restricts the speech of the user, but also denies access to that user by people who are not offended and may want to hear what the person has to say. Not the same thing at all. It would only be an apt analogy if 3 companies owned every bar in the world and banned people from all of their bars everywhere.

I second Sanchoz’s remark and add how appreciative I am of the file being broken into parts instead of just dumped in as a single file.
