Maria’s vat was in the front of six vats, each one holding the clone of a crew member of the starship Dormire, each clone waiting for its previous incarnation to die so it could awaken. The author treats the clone and the original person as the same individual. She must think identical twins are the same person too. If you have died 5 times and a clone replaced you. Then you and 4 clones have died and a new clone was uploaded artificial memories of 5 beings that weren’t the last clone.
