“A fascinating, thoughtful, and thoroughly enjoyable exploration of a major dimension of human experience.” (Steven Pinker, author of How the Mind Works)
A maverick scientist reveals the inconsistent and often paradoxical ways humans think, feel, and behave toward animals in this engaging, informative, and thought-provoking book, now newly revised.
Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat is a highly entertaining and illuminating journey through the full spectrum of human-animal relations. Drawing on his groundbreaking research in the field of anthrozoology, Dr. Hal Herzog tries to make sense of our complex relationships with animals and the challenging moral conundrums we face regarding these creatures who share our world - and some, our homes.
A blend of anthropology, behavioral economics, evolutionary psychology, and philosophy, updated to reflect evolving attitudes and the most recent findings, Some We Love, Some We Hate, Some We Eat is a poignant, often challenging, and frequently laugh-out-loud funny trip through a world of animal-rights activists, cockfighters, professional dog-show handlers, veterinary students, biomedical researchers, and more. It will forever change the way we think about other living creatures and, ultimately, how we see ourselves.

Its odd that some people think that one kind of life matters more than another kind of life. Personally I see everything as food until it proves otherwise. People included. I understand that some people think that nothing is food except plants, fungus and bacteria. Which is strange to me. Everything suffers. Even things that can’t scream. The idea that plants are okay to eat but that animals aren’t is just as weird as the idea that some animals are okay to eat and others aren’t. Nature is cruel and I guess self-deception helps some people cope with it.

I agree with everything there except the eating people part. I draw the line at granny casseroles.
Get that turkey down ya!

Looks like you’re going to have to give your location & cooking instructions to ol’ osmium.
You’re not, by any chance, also a census-taker? Perchance? What state (condition) is your liver in?

I read this book awhile back and it’s very good. Reminded me a little of Desmond Morris’s excellent ‘The Animal Contract’. I’ve since endeavoured to reduce my ’suffering footprint’. I don’t buy into that whole ‘nature is cruel’ or ‘we were given dominion over the animals’ rubbish. Modern farming is horrendous and, even if you can turn a blind eye to the suffering involved, you should be concerned about the damage it’s doing to us and the environemnt.
It’s a real shame that meat-eating vs vegetarianism has become a divisive topic in the same way as race, religion and politics. After all, vegetarianism is an act of kindness. Even as a meat-eater I can see and respect that.

Does it come with recipes for the animals we can eat? I love a good cookbook.

@GordonCoon you made the same joke a few days ago. It was about as funny as AIDS then, and time hasn’t improved the situation.
