Reparations for slavery have become a reinvigorated topic for public debate over the last decade. Most theorizing about reparations treats it as a social justice project—either rooted in reconciliatory justice focused on making amends in the present; or, they focus on the past, emphasizing restitution for historical wrongs. Olúfemi O. Táiwò argues that neither approach is optimal, and advances a different case for reparations—one rooted in a hopeful future that tackles the issue of climate change head on, with distributive justice at its core. This view, which he calls the “constructive” view of reparations, argues that reparations should be seen as a future-oriented project engaged in building a better social order; and that the costs of building a more equitable world should be distributed more to those who have inherited the moral liabilities of past injustices.
This approach to reparations, as Táiwò shows, has deep and surprising roots in the thought of Black political thinkers such as James Baldwin, Martin Luther King Jr, and Nkechi Taifa, as well as mainstream political philosophers like John Rawls, Charles Mills, and Elizabeth Anderson. Táiwò’s project has wide implications for our views of justice, racism, the legacy of colonialism, and climate change policy.

thank you so much! What we do without more excuses to transfer wealth from the middle class to the most dysfunctional nations in the global south.
This is such an important issue right now with average citizens in the west sitting on so much wealth and prosperous times ahead. Who doesn’t want to give the little they have to people they don’t know and had no awareness of wronging or intention of hurting if that actually were even the case. It doesn’t matter that this climate harm can’t even even be measured in numbers and facts or quantitated in any meaningful way.
This topic is crucial and absolutely essential right now. How else would we be able to move toward a world government authoritarian nightmarish to its core. How else could we accelerate the destruction of nation states and individual rights. Sharing this truly comes from a place rooted in a love for freedom, human rights, and truth.

There’s no “constructive view” of reparations.

I forget, who are we paying reparations to, surely all the poor souls who experienced the horrors of slavery are long dead. That just leaves their ancestors who have grown up in modern democracies as free men, so are we compensating them, or is it the ones that were left to grow up in a mud hut and walk ten miles to a germ-infested hole for water every day were compensating.
PS my ancestors dug up our own potatoes, and as I understand it the western slave ships bought the already enslaved people from tribal leaders, so surely the Africans themselves share any imagined culpability.

Never mind the naysayers, Free. Thank you for sharing this.

The book burners always show up en masse whenever a topic is raised that might threaten laissez-faire capitalism.
Adam Smith and John Maynard Keynes would almost certainly appreciate alternative views as they understood that a mind can contemplate a topic without a spontaneous convertion.

I have always been against reparations, but I think I might be coming around. Let’s say that every black person pays every white person… $10,000 dollars. As an apology for all of the crime, violence, rape, murder, robbery, and hip-hop. I mean, when I really think about it, white people really have endured a lot in the name of equality.

Osmium Help me out here, I’ve always wondered what the reason some people feel the need to liken everyone who quite reasonably disagrees with them to Nazi book burners.
Is it a distraction attempt from the lack of merit in your argument, e.g. Putin.

The simple truth is the people who enslaved them are the ones who owe reparations. The warrior kings in Africa. Zulu, Maasai, pretty much all the tribes, and others all took and sold slaves to the black slavers.
The reparations we need to give are simple.
An Education.
That’s really the only thing stopping them from taking their place within society. And having a family, since 75% of all black mothers are single, and I have seen many men talk about how they have 3, 5 even 7 kids, all from different woman. And never seeing the kids. There’s your real problem.

reparations is just redistribution from the right hand side of the bell curve to the left. dysgenic at the most extreme.

Politicians and diapers must be changed often, and for the same reason.

It’s so cold I saw a Democrat with his hands in his own pockets.
Treasury Secretary Henry Morganthau, Jr under FDR (1945)
imho “Republican” is synonymous with “Democrat”
The only difference between Republicans and Democrats is how they spend the money.
my father, a man with much more common sense than me.

Actually - The Whole bloody world needs to wake up to this crap.
1. 8 million Black People were sold into slavery. Which is about LESS Than 1% of the white population that have been sold into slavery.
Sparticus existed dudes. White Slaves far outnumbered Black slaves in history…
2. Arguements go on regarding the UK giving £24 Million to slave owners to abolish slavery. And the world demand the UK should pay upto £32 trillion in reperations. NOW STOP . £24 million was more than 2 years salery for EVERY member of the UK. AND they paid this to STOP SLAVERY.
They should be thanked. Or should the UK NOT have stopped slavery? Many British officers and men died protecting the rights of slaves and the country paid 4 times the amount america paid for several states. So why all this bull.
Slavery is NOT a matter of Skin Colour. That is Racism. Stop listening to either Black Racists or White Racists that want to make slavery a BLACK or WHITE issue. They are simply racists and want to dominate the other….
