Why do facts fail to change people’s minds? In this audiobook, we examine how we form our beliefs and maintain them with a host of cognitive biases, the difference between intelligence and thinking rationally, and some solutions for how to overcome these obstacles both in reasoning with others and in dealing with our own prejudices.

It can’t be said often enough, but now, more than ever, it’d seem, this capacity needs to be cultivated. As early in the education cycle as possible.

Gut instinct (over reason) tells me this is another one of those books that tells us WHAT to think under the pretense of telling us HOW to think.
Only one way to find out.

“Elementary, dear Watson;” Discourse, written, or spoken, is a fabric of ideas. It is not, like science, a body of general propositions expressing discovered facts, which, once invalidated are quickly abandoned. In short, it is the basic structure in which all our propositions, true or false, are made. If the terms of our discourse are incompatible or confused, the whole intellectual venture to which they belong is invalid; then our alleged beliefs are not false , but spurious.
The usual sign of confusion in our basic ideas about any topic is the persistence of rival doctrines, all many times refuted yet not abandoned, and conflicting outlooks and terminologies continue side by side to recruit adherents.
The attempt to confuse the pretentious and essentially political-philosophical approach -mainly Marxist- of “Critical Thinking” with the scientific method is an illusion, intended to deceive people typically by unjustifiably claiming or being credited with correctness or accomplishments similar to those of science. There is no such thing as “Science of Thought.” There is Thought about Science and Thought about Other Concerns which may not be each consistent with one another.
