For an entire generation, at home and abroad, the United States has waged an endless conflict known as the War on Terror. In addition to multiple ground wars, it has pioneered drone strikes and industrial-scale digital surveillance, as well as detaining people indefinitely and torturing them. These conflicts have yielded neither peace nor victory, but they have transformed America. What began as the persecution of Muslims and immigrants has become a normalized, paranoid feature of American politics and security, expanding the possibilities for applying similar or worse measures against other targets at home. A politically divided country turned the War on Terror into a cultural and then tribal struggle, first on the ideological fringes and ultimately expanding to conquer the Republican Party, often with the timid acquiescence of the Democratic Party. Today’s nativist resurgence walked through a door opened by the 9/11 era.
Reign of Terror will show how these policies created a foundation for American authoritarianism and, though it is not a book about Donald Trump, it will provide a critical explanation of his rise to power and the sources of his political strength. It will show that Barack Obama squandered an opportunity to dismantle the War on Terror after killing Osama bin Laden. That mistake turns out to have been portentous. By the end of his tenure, the war metastasized into a broader and bitter culture struggle in search of a demagogue like Trump to lead it.

Americans are some of the most ignorant people on the planet. I am an American. I wear a mask, I’m fully vaccinated and I don’t blame refugees/immigrants for the problems of our nation. I also don’t ignore the GOP is doing its flat-out best to suppress the votes of people of color. 74 Million Americans thought that buffoon was worth another 4 years.

@mklangelo - How is requiring a valid for of ID voter suppression? Illegal immigrants don’t get to vote, and if you think that “people of color” don’t have ID’s then how about you help them get one? That’s what you’re all about, isn’t it? Helping out those poor POC that need to be saved by you? If you think requiring an ID to vote is “voter suppression”, then NOT requiring ID to vote is watering down our election process and making YOUR vote count for less.

@grond2 - It is voter suppression for a simple fact. ID laws for voting or anything else. Requires 2 parts that a government must fulfill:
1) Produce the required ID
2) Making ensuring every citizens get their IDs, a mandate.
The US ability for the first 1st is already questionable given your inability to coordinate anything. But the 2nd portion, the most important portion, is absence entirely in the proposed laws.
Without the 2nd part, voter suppression is unequivocal. There is no If, there is no But.
If you are under the impression that it should be helpful Samaritans instead of the government duty to fulfill number 2. Then voter ID laws is a concept too modern for you.

@timsikes10595 in recent years there have been over 400 bills introduced in 48 states which disproportionately effect black people, making it harder for them to be able to vote. Voting is a right. That’s the very definition of suppressing the rights of black voters.
Funny how a lot of the GOP supporters who are fine with this would kick up a stink if the same restrictions applied when buying a gun.

I got no problem with voter ID, but I think every school or high school in the country should be voting sites on the day. Limiting sites is a restriction, anyone who can’t see that is ….well… a repug
