By the late 1960s and early 1970s, reeling from a wave of urban uprisings, politicians finally worked to end the practice of redlining. Reasoning that the turbulence could be calmed by turning Black city-dwellers into homeowners, they passed the Housing and Urban Development Act of 1968, and set about establishing policies to induce mortgage lenders and the real estate industry to treat Black homebuyers equally. The disaster that ensued revealed that racist exclusion had not been eradicated, but rather transmuted into a new phenomenon of predatory inclusion.
Race for Profit uncovers how exploitative real estate practices continued well after housing discrimination was banned. The same racist structures and individuals remained intact after redlining’s end, and close relationships between regulators and the industry created incentives to ignore improprieties. Meanwhile, new policies meant to encourage low-income homeownership created new methods to exploit Black homeowners.
Narrating the story of a sea-change in housing policy and its dire impact on African Americans, Race for Profit reveals how the urban core was transformed into a new frontier of cynical extraction.

Thanks so much!

This myth has long been disproven. Statistics from 3 major US banks shows black women, Asian men and women, and white men receive mortgage approval at the same rate. White single women and single black men are marginally lower.

Just to add, the single biggest detriment to all mortgage applications is marriage. You are 40% more likely to have your application approved if you married then if you are single.

@wheresmycannon” this book was a finalist for the Pulitzer for history last year. Published by University of North Carolina Press.
Not the self published wankfest of some right wing racist.
You can’t dismiss it like some anonymous Facebook post. Though I guess you will and probably feel smugly assured in your supremacy.

This was a report for the Eric Holder DOJ investigating discrimination in lending practices. I remember when this investigation was happening as it directly impacted and influenced my daily work as my job is in lending. We anxiously awaited the report to drop and then formed a committee of 11 people to go through it and analyze it’s findings. We were then tasked to create a report to present to the senior members on areas in our own operation that could be improved on.
I’m not a white supremist, I just feel it important to always recognize that if you set out with the intent to prove something, above all else, you will find it. The question is the veracity of such claims as when one sets out to prove something beyond all else they tend to dismiss, downplay, and omit facts that are counter to their claim.
I am simply saying, that a goverment investigation, looking to find discrimination (this is AG Holder we are talking about), even failed to find any.
As such, I see this as a cherry picked booked, designed to do one thing. SELL. The fact that is has been awarded a Pulitzer means virtually nothing these days and almost all awards now days (and for the most part, always) is political. As I am in fact from North Carolina (Charlotte is a huge banking hub in our nation), I won’t disclose my personal alma mater. I did however, have a sibling whom graduated from UNC Kenan–Flagler. She will be the first to attest that during her undergrad, that the liberal arts portion of UNC has become quite politically active in their teachings. I merely point this out because attaching this to the University Press of UNC does little to help said book, insomuch, that just the fact it was printed by a university press does not with itself carry any certain weight of credability.

Wow… I know saying owned is “old”, but dang, Wheresmycannon owned you.

That dumbass didn’t even read the description, let alone read the book to understand it’s primarily a about history. Not only did he not “own” the other commenter, his statements about what did happen are suspect.
