I actually read it as a book almost 80% but wanted to wait for the next book in the series before finishing it, it was a good read. I do that sometimes, keep the next book ready before finishing the one at hand. This one fell in that category.

it pains me to have to pass on this one, but while I like Apollos Thorne’s stuff, I do NOT like Asian themed cultivation stuff, where everyone in power is a corrupt hypocritical asshole…

I love Asian cultivation stuff. They are more upfront about things us westerner go through everything to hide. We are like those hypocritical religious group where our flowery deception and illusions hide the corrupt knife that stabs. Same corruption. I wish i read cultivation stuff before graduating. I would have known how to endure the harsh world. I was jaded thinking everything was perfect and fair.

Hey all, I just finished the book and wanted to leave a short comment to help anyone who wants to try giving this book a try.
As always it does have some dark parts like every cultivation novel, but it doesn’t necessarily overshadow the full story or its progress. Most hero stories need their tragedies to build character and drama, so I expected as much. Anyhow, in short it is a worthwhile read to a new series and don’t go in with prejudice of full blown asian cultivation text, it follows their traditional speech pattern but does have an interesting read through.
I didn’t wanna go into details as that would verge on spoiler territory.

@AudioBrocks, I appreciate you coming back to leave a review. I don’t have any issues with the idiosyncrasies of eastern cultivation — there’s a market for everything, regardless of your personal tastes — in fact, I’m quite fond of it.
Now, after reading some unflattering reviews elsewhere, I’m a bit concerned about the Mc being called a simp… and a cuck. lol

@dinamo.dog, oh don’t worry about that, maybe the people who posted unflattering reviews actually didn’t finish the books or misunderstood the “humble” and “reserved/shy” attitude of the MC in the beginning as “simp” and to avoid spoiler I will keep it vague, the MC is truly devoted to the love interest and says stuff that is pure fanatasy romance stuff which might have been misun
I finished the book and rest assured the MC is not a cuck.

And I appreciate @AudioBrocks coming back to leave a review. To be fair I don’t get why people complain about the “Cultivation” stuff. Personally, I’m quite fond of it. But if you’re not, there’s plenty of other genres to choose from.
Either way, what has me somehow concern me (after skimming through some reviews elsewhere) is the unflattering view some readers seems to share about the Mc’s courting practices towards the female interest, regarding a rather ‘unbalanced’ view of himself in comparison to her. Apparently the exact adjectives seem to censored here.

The female narrator sucks. She’s whisper narrating ALL THE TIME. I know she was going for the “intense” feeling, but it’s just flat and dreamlike, even during normal interactions. I couldn’t get past the first appearance of the female MC.

@dinamo.dog, I understand what you mean.
As a short summary I will address the issue.
This book doesn’t follow most common pattern where male MC is OP or grows into power soon and other side characters and female leads are lower powered than male lead.
Here, the male MC starts out living a relaxed life so he didn’t focus on cultivation. However the female Love interest is a prodigy and is already multiple levels higher than him. So he has to play catch up almost all the way from bottom, hence he views her as incredible. But he does get powerful soon, yet still she is also progressing at the same time so she is always one step above him in cultivation level.
Anyhow, in raw power display when needed, he is more creative and does come through to “save the day” kinda stuff.
Technically she is still above his level.
