“An engrossing introduction for young adult readers to the chillingly topical subject of man vs. microbe.” (The Wall Street Journal)
Did the Black Death destroy medieval Europe? Did cholera pave the way for modern Manhattan? Did yellow fever help end the slave trade? Remarkably, the answer to all of these questions is “Yes”. Time and again, diseases have impacted the course of human history in surprisingly powerful ways. From influenza to smallpox, from tuberculosis to yellow fever, Bryn Barnard describes the symptoms and paths of the world’s worst diseases - and how the epidemics they spawned have changed history forever.
Filled with fascinating, often gory details about disease and history, Outbreak! is a wonderful combination of science and history.

Covid isn’t one. If people didn’t wear masks and lived normally, I wouldn’t notice it.

AndyBook - You have internet under your bridge now? That’s great!
I’ve long pushed for greater inclusivity for trolls, goblins, orcs and other marginalized peoples. I’m glad to see that progress is being made.
Now if we can just get you to stop eating school kids and stealing handbags from old ladies I really feel that full integration with the rest of society will finally be possible.
I look forward to the day when you, AndyBook, will be able to stand proudly alongside the rest of us, a noble member of civilized humankind. Until that day, I hope your feet remain dry, that winds never gust above 10 mph and that central heating is installed, at public expense, under all troll bridges.

Erouting - I’m glad the internet allows my kind, trolls and dissenters, to connect with the aristocracy in the ivory towers to communicate!
Alas, my fellow vagabond is correct. I reject the idea that humanity is too mighty to escape it’s greatest gift. Memento Mori. The fleetingness of our life is what makes it worth living. I’ve oft wondered in these last few months the purpose of lockdowns and halting the wheel of society in favour of those at risk. Surely, those at risk are aware and should take deemed appropriate action while respecting the other’s will to go out and risk living? I feel that the governmental response has been entirely backwards and overbearing.
Contrast this episode of moral fearmongering (you wouldn’t want to kill grandma?) to a genuine plague. How benign coronavirus has been to not have bereft humanity of a third of it’s population. How benign it has been to not leave droves of people to die in the streets all the while spreading like wildfire. I recommend you to research historical accounts of the plagues and contrast it to what we’ve seen this past year and join me in thanks to this mild disease which has, by edict, ground our society to a halt. I hope in the years to come that the hyperinflation and all it’s repercusions are worth it for those who have had the privilege to live their life in a time of unknown prosperity. And to thank the generation to come for the sacrifice in social and educational development. Those who benefitted from these actions will not have to live to see the day when this house of cards comes tumbling down on those who will have to pay the price.
Kind regards, dear elf.

As someone who’s ACTUALLY worked with covid-19 patients in an ICU for the past year,I would like to inform Tielyanna that your perspective fails to take rudimentary aspects of virology and epidemiology.
Anyone can try to sound erudite, but rhetoric itself lends no veracity to an argument. An uninformed opinion is just that.
While Covid-19 is not ebola that speads like the flu, to say that it if benign suggests a significant cognitive deficiency. (Perhaps from a covid infection?)
Around 1/3 of people who test positive still have symptoms MONTHS after first getting sick. In what universe is that along benign?
Some people lose their sense of taste or smell. We now know why. In some people the virus attacks areas of the brain and the death of neurons (brain cells) causes those symptoms. Neurons don’t just grow back like your hair. Death of neurons = Benign?
I’ve see people in their 40’s with no preexisting conditions who were infected with covid-19, then had blood clots, strokes, seizures, etc. I recall one man who survived. He can no longer communicate with his wife or kids. He can’t feed himself, dress himself, go to the bathroom. His cerebral cortex is toast. Persistent vegetative state = benign?
I could go on for hours but I need to get some sleep so I can go take care of patients with this “benign” illness.
Unreal, why don’t you spend some time reading something with facts based on SCIENCE, say medical journal articles. You might actually learn something and it may prevent you from vomiting out infantile nonsense in the future.
