One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich portrays a single day, any day, in the life of a single Russian soldier who was captured by the Germans in 1945 and who managed to escape a few days later. Along with millions of others, this soldier was charged with some sort of political crime, and since it was easier to confess than deny it and die, Ivan Denisovich “confessed” to “high treason” and received a sentence of 10 years in a Siberian labor camp.
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich was mentioned in the Nobel Prize presentation speech when Solzhenitsyn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1970.
While Solzhenitsyn and his work were originally received negatively, under the leadership of Nikita Khrushchev, the book’s mass publication was allowed to undermine the influence of Josef Stalin on the Soviet Union. However, critics of this action argue that it unleashed liberalization that would cause the publication of more radical works and eventually the dissolution of the Soviet Union.

Thank you for this important book. One of Solzhenitsyn’s themes is how to remain human in a dehumanizing system, something that is very relevant for our own time.

Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is an international hero.
When you hear some black hearted fool call an American prison a “gulag”, or some befuddled ignoramus speaking of the glories of Communism, you can be sure they are ignorant of (or actually in favor of) the horrors Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn revealed in his works.

Really shows you how terrible the Soviet communism system was. Great story.

I read this when I was at school, definitely one that should be suggested while at school, it would wash away some of the rubbish the ivory tower academics fool themselves with.
Incredible writer great book for seeing the life of others under a soviet regime.

Thank you for posting this.
This book was responsible for breaking down the walls of my very narrow reading routine.
I was brought up on “nice” English authors, Enid Blyton, Agatha Christie etc.
This book blew my mind and made me want to explore all the other countries and cultures.
Try “the pillow book of Sei Shonagon” It is a diary of a Japanese lady during the middle ages (NOT a porn film of the same name) or
Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset. A story of a family dynasty. Think of an age just After the vikings.
