Since 2015, there has been a spectacular boom in a nearly two-hundred-year-old delusion—the idea that we all live on a flat plane, under a solid dome, ringed by an impossible wall of ice. It is the ultimate in conspiracy theories, a wholesale rejection of everything we know to be true about the world in which we live. Where did this idea come from? Weill draws a straight line from today’s conspiratorial moment back to the early days of Flat Earth theory in the 1830s, showing the human impulses behind divergences in belief. Faced with a complicated world out of our individual control, we naturally seek patterns to explain the inexplicable. The only difference between then and now? Social media. And, powered by Facebook and YouTube algorithms, the Flat Earth movement is growing.
At once a definitive history of the movement and a readable look at its expansive, absurd, and dangerous present, Off the Edge introduces us to a cast of larger-than-life characters, from 19th-century grifters to 20th-century small-town tyrants to the provocateurs of Alex Jones’s early-aughts internet, whose rancor sowed the early seeds of our modern division. We accompany Weill to Flat Earther conferences, where we meet moms on vacation, determined creationists, scammy YouTube celebrities and their victims, neo-Nazi rappers, and even a man determined to fly into space in a homemade rocket-powered balloon—whose tragic death proves as senseless and absurd as the theory he set out to prove.
Incisive and clear-eyed, Off the Edge tells a powerful story about belief, exploring how we arrived at this moment of polarized realities and explaining what needs to happen so that we might all return to the same spinning globe.

The Flat Earth society notoriously had offices “all around the world.”

^lol
Honestly today the internet has place where any kookie belief or idea is welcome and embraced.

It is simply not the case that there are people who will believe literally anything, no matter how absurd.
It is rather that the world is full of folk who will believe anything other than that they are dumb, and really don’t understand stuff.
You get to the same place, but by a very different route.

Flat earth is ridiculous but this idea that facebook and other social media platforms have a duty to combat “fakenews” and in a sense enforce “truth” is really vile. Trying to silence conspiracy theories has the opposite effect. It makes people really believe that they possess some secret knowledge that others are tring to keep hidden.

Contrarianism taken to the absurd! Flat-Earthers are just the hilarious fringe of a much larger problem. Science is about finding out the real nature of stuff, sometimes your conclusions about what is true change in light of new observations. Unfortunately, those who claim to have
special knowledge are often just those who are “Special”.

That’s a really great point. People despise being corrected so much that they’ll die on the dumbest hills rather than spend 2 minutes on the internet looking at legit sources.

The flat earth conspiracy was clearly put out by the establishment intelligence services just like the term ‘conspiracy theory’ to make critical thinkers and people who are able to question the rotten mainstream narrative, seem silly. It’s just more ammunition given to the programmed populous still chained in Plato’s cave watching shadows and believing them to be reality, to close down conversation. If you can look at the last two years on this planet and still think that there’s nothing amiss from the top down, then’ these are not the droids you are looking for’.

“The flat earth con was clearly put out by the estab” - uh, isn’t that merely yet another con theory? I luv that “clearly” - the inoperative term. The intentional seeding of terminology like “con theory” by intel services - yep, another ironic con theory. How self-refuting can this all get?
I think they make themselves “seem” silly, sans assistance from peeps in dark glasses, who furiously whisper into their sleeves.
“programmed populous” - u guessed it, another 1.
Why do we always turn out to be the critical thinkers, who pose the necessary questions, whereas every1 else is programmed? A bit self-serving.
Oy, I hate to see Plato dragged in2 this nonsense - do put a Socrates in it.

Hunter Biden’s laptop was a conspiracy theory 18 months ago, now it’s a proven fact… Dismiss nothing…

Wasn’t that a political allegation, rather than a con theory? It’s in the nature of con theories that they contrive a bizarre causal network & series which can never be disproven to the con theorists satisfaction, because the actual facts are always dismissed as part of the wider con theory. The con theory is not a concrete factual matrix, it’s merely an endless circularity.
Reason dictates that we must dismiss such unreason.

@BobdeNassty ? Its a fact that Hunter had a laptop, yes. FBI has had accesss to what was alleged to be on it, despite it passing through many dubious hands, and failed to indict anyone. Before you call Deep State, that was under both Trump and Biden.
How this gets any traction, while Jared gets $2 billion from the Saudis for services rendered, and prospective, is beyond me.

I have an old friend who has decided to believe in this flat earth nonsense. It is just too hard to believe that anyone could buy into such drivel. I just had a brief discussion with someone else who is questioning the existence of nuclear weapons as an unsubstantiated belief, and is asking for proof.
Meanwhile, what makes the whole conspiracy thing problematic is when there really are government conspiracies, many of which have been documented right here in these books.
