Not the Impossible Faith is a tour de force in that genre, dissecting and refuting the oft-repeated claim that Christianity could not have succeeded in the ancient world unless it was true. Though framed as a detailed rebuttal to Christian apologist J.P. Holding (author of The Impossible Faith), Carrier takes a general approach that educates the listener on the history and sociology of the ancient world, answering many questions like: How did Christians approach evidence? Was there a widespread prejudice against the testimony of women? Was resurrection such a radical idea? Who would worship a crucified criminal? And much more.
Written with occasional humor and an easy style, and thoroughly referenced, with many entertaining “gotcha!” moments, Not the Impossible Faith is a must-listen for anyone interested in the origins of Christianity. Richard Carrier, PhD, is an expert in the history of the ancient world and a critic of Christian attempts to distort history in defense of their faith.

Atheist apologetics for Richard Dawkins fans from the 2000s to feel better about their juvenile butthurt against their religious parents.

Thanks daenigma100.
I find it rich that people who believe the son of god walked the earth 2000 years ago, that angels exist, and that when die we go off to a happy place for all eternity have the gumption to insult atheists. If this isn’t for you then simply pass over it.

J P Holding always struck me as an unusually sloppy liar: but I suppose if you are determined to be fooled, you will take what opportunities you can find.
And if a well-researched history of pre-Christian religious tropes has come out of it, well - perhaps that’s worth losing a few dolts for.
Thank you daenigma100:- this sounds fascinating.

Richard carries a lot of baggage. To distort in order to counter perceived distortion is a fairly shabby tactic. As a pusher of the non-historicity theory - the equivalent of a 9/11 Truther, and other forms of Denial - his canons of historiographical research are dubious, to say the very least. Jewish intellectual history, inter alia, should not be misrepresented in the pursuit of any bogus agenda.

A man’s ethical behaviour should be based effectually on sympathy, education, and social ties and needs; no religious basis is necessary. Man would indeed be in a poor way if he had to be restrained by fear of punishment and hope of reward after death.

So, conditioned Natural Law? Because “God does not play dice?”
