Popular memory of the War of 1812 caroms from the beleaguered Fort McHenry to the burning White House to an embattled New Orleans. But the critical action was elsewhere, as Richard V. Barbuto tells us in this clarifying work that puts the state of New York squarely at the center of America’s first foreign war.
British demands to move the northern border as far south as the Ohio River put New York on the first line of defense. But it was the leadership of Governor Daniel D. Tompkins that distinguished the state’s contribution to the war effort, effectively mobilizing the considerable human and material resources that proved crucial to maintaining the nation’s sovereignty. New York’s War of 1812 shows how, despite a widespread antiwar movement and fierce partisan politics, Tompkins managed to corral and maintain support—until 1814, when Britain agreed to peace.
Retrieving New York’s War of 1812 from the fog of military history, Barbuto describes the disproportionate cost paid by the state in loss of life and livelihood. The author draws on in-depth research of the state’s legislative, financial, and militia records, as well as on the governor’s extensive correspondence, to plot the conduct of the war regionally and chronologically and to tell the stories of numerous raids, skirmishes, and battles that touched civilians in their homes and communities.
Whether offering a clearer picture of the performance of the state militia, providing a more accurate account of the conflict’s impact on the state’s diverse population, or newly detailing New York’s decisive contribution, this deeply researched, closely observed work revises our view of the nation’s perhaps least understood war.

Usual muddle by Americans when talking of “the war” of 1812 when they invaded Canada as Britain was otherwise engaged in war in Europe and in India - but a British force with Canadian militia and native volunteers beat an American force far far FAR bigger and New Orleans ? Defeating a small force AFTER the war supposedly had ended ? Oh and I’ll be the Fort which was taken AFTER the New Orleans buisness isn’t mentioned. Again with a small force which was given back got through to them. Wish the yanks would do something different for a change - and tell the truth

That does not fit the American narrative. As Patton said Americans love a winner and can’t abide a loser. That is why they do everything in their power to downplay and discredit anything that does not say they were the winners. It was not until Vietnam that the Americans had defeat shoved down their throats that they admitted to a defeat. Yet even today you can read books that claim they were never defeated in Vietnam.

The tragedy of the U.S. engagement in Vietnam yielded a political loss, an ideological loss, but one million Vietnamese died for that senselessness compared to sixty thousand U.S. forces. In every shape of the definition, the military “war” was won. The stain it left lingers and, thankfully, the Vietnamese people were able to overcome quite well.

Thanks rmoor looking forward to it. impressment and native provocation that’s the the truth. The initial invasion of Canada was the reason the White house was burned. Fair Enough .However the initial reason for the invasion of Canada was that the Canadians gave Tecumseh Guns. Leave us the guns and ammunition and you may go-Tecumseh to a Canadian/British officer. Two commonwealth men after the war were executed for arming the Seminoles and britain/canada not only didn’t do a thing but the arming of natives stopped right then and there. There fixed that for you Handmaids Tale.
