Does allowing people to own or carry guns deter violent crime? Or does it simply cause more citizens to harm each other? Directly challenging common perceptions about gun control, legal scholar John Lott presents the most rigorously comprehensive data analysis ever done on crime statistics and right-to-carry laws. This timely and provocative work comes to the startling conclusion: more guns mean less crime. In this paperback edition, Lott has expanded the research through 1996, incorporating new data available from states that passed right-to-carry and other gun laws since the book’s publication as well as new city-level statistics.
“Lott’s pro-gun argument has to be examined on the merits, and its chief merit is lots of data…If you still disagree with Lott, at least you will know what will be required to rebut a case that looks pretty near bulletproof.”—Peter Coy, Business Week
“By providing strong empirical evidence that yet another liberal policy is a cause of the very evil it purports to cure, he has permanently changed the terms of debate on gun control…Lott’s book could hardly be more timely… A model of the meticulous application of economics and statistics to law and policy.”—John O. McGinnis, National Review
“His empirical analysis sets a standard that will be difficult to match… This has got to be the most extensive empirical study of crime deterrence that has been done to date.”—Public Choice
“For anyone with an open mind on either side of this subject this book will provide a thorough grounding. It is also likely to be the standard reference on the subject for years to come.”—Stan Liebowitz, Dallas Morning News
“A compelling book with enough hard evidence that even politicians may have to stop and pay attention. More Guns, Less Crime is an exhaustive analysis of the effect of gun possession on crime rates.”—James Bovard, Wall Street Journal
“John Lott documents how far ‘politically correct’ vested interests are willing to go to denigrate anyone who dares disagree with them. Lott has done us all a service by his thorough, thoughtful, scholarly approach to a highly controversial issue.”—Milton Friedman

Thank you for you uploads, Thought Criminal ;)

Sounds like fiction to me…

What a bull… Instead comparing statistics of diffrent states he should compare to European countries and show how many people there are actually shot and how many of them are hurt that way in America. Besides such books like above are only written in US or similar countries that allow widespread gun usage.

Yes, this is hooooorible fiction. We obviously need more gay romantic audiobooks on this site to counteract this terrible terrible book. Obviously guns stop crime. Police and homeowners would be much better able to stop crime with pillows and hugs.

Thanks so much for the share, much appreciated.

“Gay romantic fiction”, unlike the policies justified by this book, doesn’t enable over 30,000 murders and suicides by gun each year; a rate 20 times higher than other 1st world countries.

All these brainwsshed retards whining sbout guns, i guess you would rather be stabbed or clubbed to death? Because the fact is, the HOMICIDE rate is what any intellectuals honest person would compare.
Funnily enough, London currently has a higher homicide rate than New York, despite the fact that London has not only banned guns, but also knives, screwdrivers, scissors and virtually every makeshift weapon imaginable.

Sickos are always present and will manage to hurt others even without any tools. On the other hand if my classmate will come to school with a gun or bomb to seek some sick retribution, there is small chance to stop him and I would prefer him to have screwdriver. Guns are good for police and for protection in lawless environments only.

A reminder: this area is for comments on the torrent above; not generalised debate and certainly not abuse of each other or any group.
Anything not a torrent comment may be deleted, if it gets out of hand the page will be locked. Go to your local bar if you are spoiling for a fight.

Oh, you got to chime in with your favorite BS talking point and now you want everyone else to stop speaking their minds, huh Gweilo? Typical.
April 11th, 2018
Gweilo, you remind everyone not to abuse any group AFTER you comment your own opinion in the generalized debate. So, you were reminding yourself, or just everyone else? (though I do like your 2nd Doctor image — we have that as common ground).

I commented on the book and what it advocates; also defended the site. Did not abuse anyone.
Now we’re getting into personal attacks and name calling: “brainwashed retards”, “cancer”, etc. Those are over the line.
And as I keep saying: this is NOT a forum, NOT a place to “speak you mind”. It’s just for commenting on this book.

Hi Gweilo,
I agree. This is a site for books, not bashing! Just go to your favorite forum to throw around your diatribes.
Let us appreciate this site for what it is - a source for books - let those of us who want to read do so - meanwhile turn off the political claptrap!!
Thank you.

Gweilo,
I would be called names than disarmed and left defenseless especially when it’s based on irrational fear and lies.
If you want to comment on the book, how about you actually LISTEN to it and address something specific instead of parroting some bogus talking point.

“There are now more guns than people in the United States.” The Washington Post 10/05.2015
“According to the Congressional Research Service, as of 2009 there were roughly twice as many guns per capita in the United States as there were in 1968: more than 300 million guns in all.” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estimated_number_of_guns_per_capita_by_country
Over 300 million guns, and that’s 2009 figures.
In that case, there should be zero crime in the US. :-D
More conservative BS! :-D :-D :-D
April 14th, 2018
@drkmater - You realize violent crime is down some 51% since the assault weapons ban ended in 2004, right? Also 98% of all mass public shootings in the last 50 years have happened in “gun free zones”.
April 15th, 2018
Finally some facts are published, and not the typical emotion based fact-free gun ban babble readily spewed by you know who… (you are)…
I have seen some scary books pass through, but that is ones right, and I am good with that. But it is strange that such a large part of our population (US) seems to have either forgotten history, or never been taught it, fact based, in regards to politics, government, European history, American history, and world history. So many academic institutions, like the one I crawled out of, are rewriting history, and people are falling for it. That old lemon you just painted and made look pretty hardly runs, but since you are such a good sales person, they are going to buy it, without testing it out, and getting a real education. Education is the point.

Wanna bet his ‘research’ was sponsored by the NRA?
A bit like the tobacco industry sponsoring all those ’studies’ concluding smoking didn’t cause any health problems.
Except now we know better.

jonwb claimed: ‘London currently has a higher homicide rate than New York’. He is wrong.:
- New York murder rate is 5.7 per 100,000
- London murder rate is 1.4 per 100,000
Whilst the absolute values change yeat by year, the considerable higher rate in New York is consistent; as it is in the US compared to the UK.
So, the only possible conclusions:
- Control, as in place in the UK, is effective in reducing murders.
- The US is a considerably more violent society than the UK.
