Apparently the theme is that average and mediocre white men are raised believing that the world belongs to them. As an average and mediocre white man I know that’s not true. It belongs to the 1%, rich and powerful. I’m a wage slave like most everyone else so I’ll pass on a book that equates the colour of my skin with some inherent racism i don’t have.

@AJRaffles & burningpanda - when the whole world sees fat, dumb Americans get dragged up in camo and wave military-issue weaponry around just because their feelings have been hurt or because the tin foil on their heads has affected their tiny brains, I’d say that attacking a book you haven’t listened to (I’m not convinced you can read) makes you exactly the kind of mediocre snowflake this work was written about.

I always wonder who these books are for. White guys who want to pat themselves on the back for being supportive? Academics who actually want to study both sides of the arguement? I started working at Arby’s when I was sixteen, and at one point held 3 jobs while still in high school! I’ve never not had a job since. And I was raised middle class, though I’m not sure I’d still describe myself that way.

Racism isn’t individual prejudice. Anyone can be prejudiced. Racism is power + prejudice, and power is not a possession it’s a relationship.
White people are born with more power than “people of color” (POC) because of the Whites that came before them.
POC are still fighting so they can sit at the table and share this power, but you are denying that power exists.
POC see you at the table; they know you have this power, and denying it only convinces us that you’re complicit.
Regardless of your class, if you were to become - the U.S. president, you would not have your competence questioned or your wife called “a gorilla in heels” because of skin color. (Yes. This happened to the Obamas.)
Books like these aren’t intended to make you ashamed of being White but to educate you about the world’s facts so you can improve yourself. And realizing and fixing faults can be tough but part of becoming more mature.
For example, f you witnessed something like a “racial microaggression,” you would probably not notice or use your power to stop it. - participating in racism.
Any class of White person can do this.
