  Like you guys, I haven’t read the book either. However, doesn’t it also have a satirical function? To enable people to view events from a different perspective?

  I don’t think that the American left, such as it is, is fascist (a mildly contentious term) - because it still contains a strain of liberalism, which both the far right & far left equally detest, and tried to destroy. Empowering the State, at the expense of the diminished individual, is another foundational area where both extremes are ad idem.

  (Ordered liberty & the rights-based legal order - liberalism, in the gen stream - are extremely tenuous & fragile. Prone to decay, neglect, incomprehension and dissolution.)

  Successful communicators like Jonah Goldberg use the language well and persuade people easily. I believe he has come to this book with the perspective of both sides of the argument.I will bet he grew up in a liberal atmosphere but maturity brought a different perspective.

  It is up to each individual to get the message and process it for themselves. The trouble comes when pundits process the message and come to a conclusion. Why are people so lazy now as to not read or listen to books themselves from start to finish? It so much easier now to just listen to books.

  Please remind me of right wing genocide? I don’t believe the Nazis were right wing, I see them as reactionaries after the same goal as Communism. The powerbrokers during Spanish colonization were Jesuits, not strictly Catholic orthodox, but loose cannons with their own agendas.   The Jesuits? Along with the Dominicans, they offered the first substantial critique of imperial abuses - from within an empire itself. As with Bartolomé de las Casas. They foll the Dominicans in indicting the encomenderos, & refused absolution to slave owners, and even stated that priests who took their confession were committing a mortal sin.

  Their position was based on Catholic Canon law-derived human rights doctrine. They weren’t perfect, but genocidal? The later suppression of the Jesuits was a politically instigated removal of such “troublemakers” from most of the countries of W Eur & their colonies. This accomp the rise of racial nationalism in the 18th c.

  They were regarded as being on the far left in Sth & Cent Amer, & were conseq targeted & murdered by right-wing juntas. An outspoken critic, Archbishop Óscar Romero was murdered while saying Mass, in 1980 in El Sal. He had pleaded with Pres Carter to stop supplying the fascists with weapons. That could be a relev factor in the context of this bk.

  Their slogan was: ‘Be a Patriot: Kill a Priest.’

  An indicator of the perception of them as being “too radical” is the fact that the first Jesuit elected to the papacy is Pope Francis.

  @caesar963 Judging from your handle, I will presume we are of similar age and possibly the same perceptions. Your argument about Cent. America isn’t necessarily correct nor incorrect. From a vantage point that how far right or far left one perceives their opponent is subjective to the political stance one has. I like to think I am one click to the right of center, I agree with some of the things left leaning people do and say. Any country that the Jesuit have touched seem to swing further left than they were previously, so a lesser left leaning group would be seen as conservative, correct?

  I have seen that swing myself in my birth country. One of the top universities who graduate lawyers as well people who make policy for the country is Jesuit run and I have seen on the ground how markedly the swing has gone from center to far left. All while wearing the mantle of the “conservative” Church. At least here in San Francisco, the Archbishop has stated officially that Catholic politicians should not have the ability to receive Communion while supporting elective abortion or euthanasia/suicide. That’s a Church that stands by its most basic tenets, not one that churns out social justice warriors.

If anything, they are reactionary, not extremists. BLM and antifa are not as described on the tin if you really pay attention to what they do on the ground. Distill their mission statements and don’t only trust the media or internet sources. I live in the hot bed of anti establishment sentiment, and I have yet to see a city or neighborhood that benefits from their efforts. If anything they just creat a perpetual motion machine of causes they can exploit but not solve.

  Any fule kno fascism is an economic movement — the first fascist governments were helped to power by the bourgeoisie and targetted socialists first. They garbed themselves with unions etc but killed those among their own ranks who mistook fascism for a redistributionist project.

  The Communist Clara Zetkin identified this in 1923 in her book, The Struggle Against Fascism.
