ABOUT THE BOOK
The Powder of Death opens with a returned envoy to China meeting an English scholar in Oxford in the mid-13th century; their purpose is to share a deadly secret. They vow that the knowledge of gunpowder must die with them.
The audiobook tells the story of its rediscovery, one man’s obsession with the powder of death, and Edward III’s determination to use it to his advantage. The nature of warfare is changed forever, and the world hears the death knell of knightly chivalry.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Julian Stockwin was born 15 January 1944 and wanted to go to sea ever since he could remember. His mother said that as a toddler he went up to sailors on the street, and on one occasion dragged home a dead seabird because it smelled of the sea! He was entranced when his great uncle Tom Clay, a seaman in square-rigged ships who had sailed around the Horn in the “Cutty Sark”, took him over this ship. As a young boy he read everything about the sea and was especially terrified by a description of a great storm, but longed to go to sea to experience one.
He won a scholarship to a grammar school, but his mind was captivated by seeing low grey shapes far out to sea, outward bound to who knew where. He passed this sight every day on my way to school; his scholastic performance suffered!
In the hope of having the nonsense knocked out of him, his father sent him to a tough sea-training school. This only strengthened his resolve for a life at sea and at fifteen he joined the Royal Navy.
After leaving the Navy (rated Petty Officer) he practised as an educational psychologist. He worked for some time in Hong Kong, where he was commissioned into the Royal Naval Reserve.

ABOUT THE READER
Greg Wagland is resident of the UK, born in Oxford and now living near Cambridge and has narrated over two hundred titles to date, in both fiction and non-fiction genres, including science fiction, crime, YA, romance, history, poetry, biography and spiritual titles. His narration skills are reinforced by drama training, 25 years in the acting profession and a working knowledge of several foreign languages.
His interest in audiobooks began in 1992 when he began narrating for RNIB Talking Books in London: in those days they still used tape! He still records with them and also for the charity Calibre.
