23 full-cast dramas based on the 2000 AD comic character Judge Dredd.
The BBC Radio dramas, The Day the Law Died by John Wagner and The Apocalypse War by John Wagner & Alan Grant were produced in 1995 by Dirk Maggs and were adapted from comic storylines. I ripped them from the FLAC files uploaded to archive.org by CosmicSnail. Thank-you again. Oddly, the first disc had a mastering error causing the volume in the right channel to suddenly increase about 10 minutes in. I have fixed this with Audacity.
The Big Finish dramas (Judge Dredd & Strontium Dog) were produced from 2002 to 2004 and are all original stories. One of the Dredd episodes; Pre-emptive Revenge by Jonathan Clements is a time-travel story featuring Strontium Dog and is set much earlier in Dredd’s personal timeline than any of the other tales. It is for this reason I’ve lumped it in with the Strontium Dog episodes to avoid temporal confusion.
The Penguin Audio Dramas were released in 2021 & 2022 and are adapted from comic storylines.
The folders are numbered in order of year of production, which is a fine way to listen, but if you want to listen in timeline order, this is roughly the way to go…
1. BBC: The Day the Law Died by John Wagner [2099] This date is apocryphal - in the comics this story starts in the year 2101.
2. BBC: The Apocalypse War by John Wagner & Alan Grant [2099} - This date is apocryphal - in the comics this story starts in the year 2103.
3. Penguin: Dredd vs Death by John Wagner & Alan Grant [2102]
4. Penguin: Judge Dredd: America by John Wagner, Garth Ennis & Alan Grant [2112]
5. Penguin: Judge Anderson: Shamballa by Alan Grant [2112]
6. Penguin: Judge Dredd: The Pit by John Wagner [2119]
7 - 21. Big Finish: Judge Dredd Original Dramas - Entire folder in numbered order [2124 - 2126]
22. Penguin: Judge Dredd: Origins by John Wagner [2129]
23. Big Finish: Strontium Dog folder, Judge Dredd - Pre-emptive Revenge by Jonathan Clements [time travel from 2188 to 2114]
I encoded these as FDK VBR 4 files. For the Penguin books I used InAudible.

Disappointing. I was looking forward to this, but all the background noise and certain voice-acting makes it difficult to listen to and understand; Graphic Audio really seems to do the whole “audio movie” better. Hope the other books are better than the first.

Thanks for putting this together. Agree with Tommy121 - the few I’ve heard all have the issues cited: dialogue hard to hear before even tackling the sometimes very distinct accents. Repeated listen is fine but hard to hear due to background effects and/or music makes sections unenjoyable drudgery. Grok it!

In my opinion the audio stories were hit and miss. I consider some of the Big Finish audios, such as Trapped On Titan, some the worst Dredd stories ever written.
The original 2000AD Dredd stories by Wagner and Grant - and Wagner writing by himself - will always be the definitve Dredd adventures.

I personally don’t think sci-fi works that well as audio. I’ve never been a huge fan of Doctor Who as audio. Some are good, some are poor.
Dredd’s world is similar to Blade Runner. A futuristic dystopian city of the future. Millions of people living in vast towers blocks. Robots, advanced weapons, Judges on huge motorbikes, huge overpass roadways. None of that can be captured on audio.
A story like The Apocalypse War - a nuclear war between Mega City 1 and East Meg 1 - is on an unparalleled scale. You cannot capture the scale of the conflict on audio. Impossible. If you read the graphic novel reprint you will appreciate the vast scale of the storyline. Audio only doesn’t do it justice.
I do think Toby Longworth did a great Dredd voice though. He was the voice of Dredd in the Big Finish audios. His Dredd was a little too petulant at times, maybe a bit too emotional, I always imagined Dredd to be calmer but imho he nailed the voice. “I am the law!”

You really shouldn’t compress audio drama. It causes clipping & distortion. 1 hour AudioDrama normally requires 120-200 MB. Compressing it down to 50-60 MB really causes a loss in audio quality. You lose spatialness as well. It’s lovely you provided them but if possible could you re-release in a better format, closer to CD quality I’ve suggested. Many thx

I see that your only torrent (now deleted) didn’t mention FLAC or lossless anywhere. You wouldn’t be a two-faced hypocrite as well as an entitled sod, would you?

Thanks a lot for the upload, i think that will be fun to listen to.
As for the quality, well sometimes we don’t have the best but can still enjoy it, here it was ripped from a FLAC, so even at 64 it should be good enough.
About the SF not working in audio format that is just a personal taste, it works great most of the time imo. And you can still enjoy even if you don’t “see” the scale of things in the story, for sure an audio dramatisation of comics will be different than an audiobook so what difference is good.
About the hard to hear dialogues, you can tweek the audio with an equalizer, i always do it with every audiobooks.
And of course, if you listen with a headset you need the best quality not to hear the noises but that’s not our problem, only take the best quality you find and don’t complain, or buy the original stuff.

I do have to ask now that I have seen your Big Finish collection… Do you have the original CDs? I only managed to buy a few of them and would love to get the WAVs of those the complete collection.
