These are dangerous times for democracy. We live in an age of winners and losers, where the odds are stacked in favour of the already fortunate. Stalled social mobility and entrenched inequality give the lie to the promise that ‘you can make it if you try’. And the consequence is a brew of anger and frustration that has fuelled populist protest, with the triumph of Brexit and election of Donald Trump.
Michael J. Sandel argues that to overcome the polarised politics of our time, we must rethink the attitudes toward success and failure that have accompanied globalisation and rising inequality. Sandel highlights the hubris a meritocracy generates among the winners and the harsh judgement it imposes on those left behind. He offers an alternative way of thinking about success - more attentive to the role of luck in human affairs, more conducive to an ethic of humility and more hospitable to a politics of the common good.

So, Knowledge, Skills, Ability and Experience are not a good way to choose doctors, lawyers, teachers, firefighters, football and baseball players, etc?
What’s are some of the alternatives? Gender, Skin Color, Social Status, Sexual Orientation, Political Connections, Socialism?
No thanks! Came from another (Socialist) country, to this magnificent country, for opportunities that never existed there.Social engineering never works!

People against meritocracy are racists.

Same here. Born and raised in the USSR, please don’t repeat that insane experiment ever again

You haven’t even engaged with the author argument here yet pretend to support meritocracy…you can definitely disagree with the author position but make a counter argument at least.
Ohhh wait… you don’t know what his arguments are because you haven’t read the book; lol how ridiculous

Have any of you read the book before commenting?

I haven’t read the book before commenting, so I have to say I’m feeling purrrdy smug right now.
By way of commenting on the unread book itself, one still calls the dood who comes bottom of his class in med school “Doctor” so there are some cunning structural ways around the awful tyranny of merit.

Thank you. I have watched his law based lectures, it’s really thought provoking.
But I notice it’s related to Trump, puke. Everything didn’t start or due to Trump. The same issues relate to every western country. And if Clinton was in the WH they’d be there too.
You can see the contempt most “progressives” have for “fly over country.” That contempt, as seen in Clinton’s Deporables speech (which she made several times to private donors, it wasn’t a slip), is known. Read Hillbilly Elegy for a better understanding. The knew formation of “deplorables” is “racist whites,” now they can be ignored again by the DNC.

How to ruin an audiobook: rip it as a single mp3.

I haven’t read this yet but I’ve read several books on the subject. I don’t think anyone is saying that the idea of merit-based compensation is wrong, they’re just saying the system we have simply isn’t merit-based. Merit-for-pay is not merit. Getting a million dollars worth of private education doesn’t give some attorney’s child more “merit”, it just perpetuates aristocracy under the guise of fairness. You can’t say a system is fair or someone achieves (or doesn’t) based on merit when the cards are stacked for or against them.
If that’s the system you want, fine, but don’t call it merit.

@daenigma100 Thanks for this. IMO Michael Sandel is one of the most important political philosopher in the US. But he is more respected and popular in Asia than in the ultra divided America, because his middle way approach does not server either political left nor right.

The download was good, and the book was excellent.
The author, Michael J. Sandel, produced a critical analysis of both pay-as-merit and the hubris brought on by merit-based-systems. The author’s arguments are also rational and as far as I can tell supported by proper evidence.
I will add that this is book is very much politically neutral and the author is critical of both sides at various points though-out the book. If anything I’d say he’s slightly more critical of the left, but in an extremely fair way.

merit is the only way to rise above circumstances In my humble experience of over 56 yrs. but hey whatever lets you sleep
