Young Black Americans have been trying to realize the promise of the American Dream for centuries and coping with the reality of its limitations for just as long. Now, a new generation is pursuing success, happiness, and freedom - on their own terms.
In It Was All a Dream, Reniqua Allen tells the stories of Black millennials searching for a better future in spite of racist policies that have closed off traditional versions of success. Many watched their parents and grandparents play by the rules, only to sink deeper and deeper into debt. They witnessed their elders fight to escape cycles of oppression for more promising prospects, largely to no avail. Today, in this post-Obama era, they face a critical turning point.
Interweaving her own experience with those of young Black Americans in cities and towns from New York to Los Angeles and Bluefield, West Virginia, to Chicago, Allen shares surprising stories of hope and ingenuity. Instead of accepting downward mobility, Black millennials are flipping the script and rejecting White America’s standards. Whether it means moving away from cities and heading South, hustling in the entertainment industry, challenging ideas about gender and sexuality, or building activist networks, they are determined to forge their own path.
Compassionate and deeply reported, It Was All a Dream is a celebration of a generation’s doggedness against all odds, as they fight for a country in which their dreams can become a reality.

How many of these young millennial blacks don’t have fathers

We promised you opportunity, not results. You have the opportunities, there are countless successful black people in every single profession in America. There are also countless black millionaires. Now stop your bitching, stop blaming other people, and WORK for your results. You own your outcome. No one else.

Plase your blame where it belongs. The Democrats are the ones to blame for the destruction of the family in the black population. The Dems are to blame for “social” programs the keep you unemployed. And last but not least the Democrats are the ones that made laws that pushed nearly an entire generation of black men into prison. Place the blame where it belongs AUTHOR! Just remember who authored the “Tough on crime” bill, Joe Biden.

Nothing in this world is free. It is “yours” if you work hard to earn it. Sounds like you are a supporter of Antifa or perhaps the Marxist terrorist organization known as BLM.

More like a ‘nightmare’ if Obama had anything to do with it. Liberals let these young black people believe it is people like Trump and big business that are holding them back. The TRUTH is a person can make the best of things, or just give up (like the Democrats want). Not everyone can be doctors or lawyers. Otherwise, EVERYONE would be doctors and lawyers. There are blacks who work the same job I get and are treated equally and paid equally. Not every place is like this. But there are also places who would not hire ME because I am white. Racism goes both ways (another thing Democrats say is incorrect). There will not be kindness between races as long as the Left, ANTIFA, BLM, and the KKK have anything to do with it.

RE:sable663 —
The fact that you, sable663, would not be hired at a beauty salon catering to black women, because you are white, is an exception to the rule of white privilege. As a rule, you are NOT excluded or marginalized in a America. But as a rule, people of color ARE excluded or marginalized in America — and this rule, this pattern, is racism.
I have no doubt there are other places too, that will not hire you because you are white. But these places are few and far between — and they are NOT the most powerful, largest institutions in America. And if you work for any of the most powerful institutions in America as a white person, you will not face multiple obstacles to career advancement because of the color of your skin and your ethnic background.
Racial discrimination and racial prejudice DOES exist on all sides, and within all ethnic communities too (colorism).
But instances of individual prejudice do not equal racism, UNLESS those instances are part of a a complex, widespread, and pervasive PATTERN of discriminatory actions and systemic bias which privilege a dominant group (whites in America) and which routinely exclude or marginalize people with non-dominant ethnic backgrounds (people of color in America).
Your reference to “races” also concerns me. Remember, race is a construct which developed from colonialism and oppressive labor systems. It is not a biological thing. People w red hair, fair skin, and freckles exist as a biological thing, but there is no biological “race” of redheads. If, however, people w these traits were forced to work the worst jobs, to live amongst themselves, and so on, then a redhead culture, cuisine, and dialect, would develop and redheads would likely be considered a “race.” But that would be a social construct, not a biological thing.
