Written by developmental biologist Jonathan Wells, Icons of Evolution has become a modern classic. Taking aim at 10 common “icons” used to bolster Darwin’s theory in widely used biology textbooks, Wells shows how they turn out to be scientific urban legends, long-refuted fakes, or misrepresentations of the scientific data. Wells’ book spurred revisions to a number of biology textbooks, and it has been translated into Polish, Czech, Chinese, and Japanese. This book is a must-read for anyone interested in how high school biology textbooks present modern Darwinian theory, and particularly for anyone planning to teach evolutionary theory. Laden with extensive references to peer-reviewed scientific literature, Icons of Evolution will be impossible for a fair-minded reader to ignore.
The Icons
The 10 “icons” discussed by the book are:
- The Miller-Urey Experiment: A 1953 experiment that supposedly showed how the chemical building blocks of life could have formed spontaneously on the early Earth.
- Darwin’s Tree of Life: A branching tree diagram used to illustrate the descent with modification of all living things from common ancestors.
- Homology in Vertebrate Limbs: Similarities in limb bones used as evidence that vertebrates (animals with backbones) are all descended from a common ancestor.
- Haeckel’s Embryos: Drawings of similarities in early embryos used as evidence that all vertebrates (including humans) evolved from fish-like animals.
- Archaeopteryx: A fossil bird with teeth in its mouth and claws on its wings, often cited as the missing link between ancient reptiles and modern birds.
Peppered Moths: Photos of moths resting on tree trunks that supposedly provide evidence for evolution by natural selection.
- Darwin’s Finches: Thirteen species of finches on the Galápagos Islands that are used as evidence for the origin of species by natural selection.
- Four-Winged Fruit Flies: Fruit flies with an extra pair of wings that supposedly provide evidence that DNA mutations provide the raw materials for macroevolution.
- Fossil Horses: Fossils once used to show that evolution proceeds in a straight line and later used to show that it doesn’t.
- The Ultimate Icon: Drawings of ape-like creatures gradually evolving into humans, used to show that we are just animals produced by purposeless natural causes.

The dude in the centre of the cover’s line-up is the most likely to be furiously, sweatily googling “non-tendentious” material to denigrate the author, the uploader, the uploader’s family, their cat…

The dude on the far left is the original author, and the one next to him is the uploader.

Before criticising the Intelligent Design lobby, folk should remember that without Creationism the double helix might have been discovered by an American university.
I think we can all agree that if there needs to be stupidity on offer, it’s best if we let the US keep as much of it as it needs.

“Developmental biologist” = crypto-Creationist
May 8th, 2019
Note to litote:
“The author, a Berkeley Ph.D in Biology, is not a creationist, but his book describes many serious misrepresentations of facts commonly found in biology textbooks, which are used to perpetuate belief in evolution.”

Deeply misleading to present this screed as “science”. In his own words: “my studies, and my prayers convinced me that I should devote my life to destroying Darwinism.”
Notes on the author, from https://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Jonathan_Wells:
“Jonathan Wells is a member of the Discovery Institute and a follower of the Rev. Sun Myung Moon’s Unification Church, and a prominent advocate of intelligent design, as well as the author of Icons of Evolution and Regnery Publishing’s Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design.
Along with Michael Behe, he is one of the few
in the movement with demonstrably legitimate credentials (he has a Ph.D. in biological science). Wells completed the Ph.D. for the sole purpose of “debunking” evolution. Despite his credentials, he has been caught bullsh1tting or outright lying on many occasions, and his books are generally considered garbage by mainstream science. Wells has also lent his support to the cause of AIDS denialism”.

Yeah, those stupid Americans, with their stupid monarchy, Boris Johnson, Jeremy Corbyn, Brexit, David Cameron, Daily Mail - It was the Sun wot decided it!
What have those stupid Americans ever done for us, eh?

I swear, soon I am going to upload a MegaPack devoted to the actual demonstrated science of evolution and watch the hater’s heads explode.

Just give me that old time religion…
We will pray to Aphrodite,
She wears a see-through nightie,
And it’s good enough for me.
Let us pray to Zarathustra,
We’ll pray just like we use-ta,
And it’s good enough for me.

I, for one, welcome our Overlord’s impending Megapack of Doom. In the meanwhiles, if I may offer a wrinkle in respect of empirical inquiry sans objective moral values, with this infamous ode - or ode to infamy: “once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down?
That’s not my department, ” says wernher von braun.
Some have harsh words for this man of renown,
But some think our attitude
Should be one of gratitude,
Like the widows and cripples in old london town
Who owe their large pensions to wernher von braun.

Sauser, old chap - To begin with, you should probably pray for better orthography and improved syntax. Would ‘Grammarly’ be out of the question? It might be a true deliverance.

Much of this comment section: ad hominems, attacking the man instead of the arguments.
“A fallacious objection to an argument or factual claim by appealing to a characteristic or belief of the person making the argument or claim, rather than by addressing the substance of the argument or producing evidence against the claim; an attempt to argue against an opponent’s idea by discrediting the opponent himself.”

*instead of discussing the arguments
Or reviewing.

@teall: I think pointing out the author is a sel-avowed anti-evolution activist is relevant, especially when the book title and description is designed to make it seem he is actually concerned with improving science education.
But if you actually care: many reviews of the book are collected at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Icons_of_Evolution The only positive ones are from Creationists.
e.g.: Nick Matzke reviewed the work in an article titled “Icon of Obfuscation”, and critiqued the book chapter by chapter. Matzke concluded, “Icons of Evolution makes a travesty of the notion of honest scholarship”, and that “Icons contains numerous instances of unfair distortions of scientific opinion, generated by the pseudoscientific tactics of selective citation of scientists and evidence, quote-mining, and ‘argumentative sleight-of-hand’, the last meaning Wells’s tactic of padding his topical discussions with incessant, biased editorializing”
And: in 2009, Patricia Princehouse, Professor at Case Western Reserve University, testified in a Mount Vernon City School District hearing that Icons was full of fraudulent representations of material in science textbooks.
Christopher Hitchens describes the book as “unlikely even to rate a footnote in the history of piffle”.
I’m sure it goes down well with anti-vaxers, flat-earthers and Blacks for Trump, all skilled at doublethink and ignoring plan facts.
May 9th, 2019
Is “anti-evolution activist” supposed to be a negative thing then? Evolution theory is a cult itself.
Your last sentence is just a weak attempt at trying to lump group x with y z and so on.

RESPONSES
by Jonathan Wells and others to the critics of Icons of Evolution.

@teall:
Wrong. You have the same level of research skills as the author. The author has written other books defending Creationism, such as “The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design”. To quote a review of the book:
“The Politically Incorrect Guide to Darwinism and Intelligent Design” is the latest, rather valiant, but intellectually dishonest, effort by Discovery Institute Fellow Jonathan Wells to defend the merits of an idea - Intelligent Design - which was demonstrated conclusively, beyond any reasonable doubt, to be a religious doctrine pretending to be science at the 2005 Kitzmiller vs. Dover (Dover, PA) trial presided by Republican Federal judge John Jones. In Judge Jones’ landmark, historic decision, he concluded that Intelligent Design is indeed a religious doctrine masquerading as science.”

What’s sad is people who buy these books don’t realise their stupidity is being exploited to make some liars rich
May 9th, 2019
@litote You need to learn the difference between intelligent design and creationism. No excuses.
May 9th, 2019
@teall - So creationists don’t believe the creator was intelligent then? Wow, never thought I’d agree with any creationist theory, but I like the sound of that one……
May 9th, 2019
@packs That’s a worthless provocative comment and you probably know it.
May 9th, 2019
No, packs, it’s that many who hold to Intelligent Design are also evolutionists, who simply reject whole-sale naturalism. Incidentally, creation scientists such as Hugh Ross reject intelligent Design precisely because of its ambiguity, and its line of reasoning.
May 9th, 2019
And many who see the ontelligent design also completely see through the house of cards that is evolution(ism).
May 9th, 2019
*intelligent design
May 9th, 2019
Intelligent design?
Uh… tonsils, appendix, gall bladder, sinus cavities, wisdom teeth, and tits on guys. Great designs bonehead…and keep outa Mary’s knickers… we all know where that’s headed.
May 9th, 2019
@Tunabopper none of those are “bad designs” and if you have tits as a man; stop being a fat sub-man.
May 9th, 2019
Tunabopper! You curvaceous temptress, you! Don’t add mayo to your tuna - it usually has plenty. Forget about Mary’s knickers, it’s her brassiere that’s in danger with your mountainous moobs on the scene!

Great book, thanks!

What a waste of space. I hate it when an agenda drapes itself in (false) science.
July 19th, 2020
Why is it creationists have to lie? Why do they misrepresent facts? I have never understood this. If creationism (intelligent design) was good science, they would not need to.
August 20th, 2020
When I see all the Anti-Science Evolution Believers Crying in the Comment Section I know it’s gonna be GOOD!
