I Can’t Breathe is a book by best selling author Matt Taibbi that examines what life is like on the streets, and our Kafkaesque court system. He informs us on the issues around policing, mass incarceration, the underground economy, and racial disparity in law enforcement. It focuses on a particular case of a forty-three-year-old black man named Eric Garner who was arrested for selling bootleg cigarettes, put in an illegal chokehold, and strangled to death by a police officer. Garner’s final agonizing moments were a plead for respite, “I can’t breathe”, which were ignored by the arresting officers.
Matt Taibbi’s deeply reported retelling of these events liberates Eric Garner from the abstractions of newspaper accounts and lets us see the man in full—with all his flaws and contradictions intact. A husband and father with a complicated personal history, Garner was neither villain nor victim, but a fiercely proud individual determined to do the best that he could for his family, bedeviled by bad luck, and ultimately subdued by forces beyond his control. No one emerges unsullied, from the conservative district attorney who half-heartedly prosecutes the case, to the progressive mayor caught between the demands of outraged activists and the foot-dragging of uncooperative police officials.
It is a masterly narrative of urban America and a scathing indictment of the perverse incentives built into our penal system, I Can’t Breathe drills down into the particulars of one case to confront us with the human cost of our broken approach to dispensing criminal justice.

Atheist George Floyd be like “I can’t believe” lol

@akir the atheist who attended The Fountain of Praise church and did ministry work?
Was he a good person? Not necessarily. But that might be a prerequisite for church-goers these days, judging by your comment.

@akir This is based around a different case, of Eric Garner. Though George Floyd’s case was even more brutal to watch. A grown man knelt on his neck for nearly 10 minutes while he was already subdued.
Both men were killed for such insignificant charges/accusations, of selling some cigarettes and the other, a counterfeit $20 bill.
I also doubt Floyd was christian:
“After his release, Floyd became more involved with Resurrection Houston, a Christian church and ministry, where he mentored young men and posted anti-violence videos to social media.[6][7][8][9] He delivered meals to senior citizens and volunteered with other projects, such as the Angel By Nature Foundation, a charity founded by rapper Trae tha Truth.[44] Later, Floyd became involved with a ministry that brought men from the Third Ward to Minnesota in a church-work program with drug rehabilitation and job placement services.[6] A friend of his acknowledged that Floyd “had made some mistakes that cost him some years of his life.” but that he had been turning his life around through religion.[7]”

I stand with Derek Chauvin on the matter of George “scumbag” Floyd.
But as this book’s not about Floyd, I am not sure why the comments section is dedicated to him.
Could be interesting, could be more propaganda, I will listen to it first, unlike this lot, to decide. Thanks OP.

Gordoncoon, stand with chauvin, the wife beater? Lol. Okay, he is in a supermax, where he will die.

@lisiva5995 @akhleshbhadouria How are drug addicts POS? If you allow poverty to roam in populations, you can expect nothing but crime and drugs. Just as you would pushed into doing given the same circumstances. To push people into poverty and to say they are POS for trying to survive takes a very ignorant view.
@GordonCoon Yes, thank you for having an open mind good sir/madame. Matt Taibbi is an excellent journalist, and is highly regarded. You will find nothing but an objective analysis.

I like Matt and even throw him a 5er on Substack every month BUT he will have a tough time living down his time at that POS rag ‘Rolling Stone’ Nice to see though that he has seen the light and has finally warmed up to the Right side…

If you can’t generate any compassion for all suffering human beings, you’ll find it very difficult trying to discover any good purpose for your existence.

Life is short. Let’s spend more time arguing online with strangers…

…I don’t agree with you, whoever you are.

Awesome stuff A.B.B, really appreciated.
Cheers and thank you for the great effort!
Don’t mind the other opinions. I saw on Hate Inc. that you were engaged in hot discussions. That is expected.
I also take the same approach as you. I try to stay civil and understanding and never react impulsively to what is being thrown at me.
Keep up the great work!

@Loewe Yes! that is awesome to hear. If people do not start using a better approach, things are going to get a lot worse. And I don’t mean here, but in societies. Also, the other book will follow soon, so stick around!

Thanks, A.B.B., for the upload and making me aware of this book. Unfortunately, the narrator is so atrocious that I lasted about 15 minutes, before I bailed on the audiobook and ordered a copy of the dead tree edition. But, again, thanks for the upload. An important book about an important issue.

Sometimes, if u try fiddling with the sound, p’haps double speed it - it’ll make everyone sound more chipmunky, but it’ll also bury some irritating aspects of the performance.

hemophiliac George Floyd be like “I can’t bleed” lol
January 21st, 2022
Thanks for the tip, Caesar, but this one is pretty much beyond repair, i.e., “You can’t make chicken salad….” I often wonder how some of these folks score these narration gigs. Somebody’s unemployed frat brother or cousin? I would have thought that audiobooks are a big enough sector of the publishing industry by now that more thought would be given to quality control than apparently is.
(Again, A.B.B., please don’t take these remarks as ingratitude.)
