The classic work of political, economic, and historical analysis, powerfully introduced by Angela Davis.
In his short life, the Guyanese intellectual Walter Rodney emerged as one of the leading thinkers and activists of the anticolonial revolution, leading movements in North America, South America, the African continent, and the Caribbean. In each locale, Rodney found himself a lightning rod for working class Black Power. His deportation catalyzed 20th-century Jamaica’s most significant rebellion, the 1968 Rodney riots, and his scholarship trained a generation how to think politics at an international scale. In 1980, shortly after founding of the Working People’s Alliance in Guyana, the 38-year-old Rodney would be assassinated.
In his magnum opus, How Europe Underdeveloped Africa, Rodney incisively argues that grasping “the great divergence” between the West and the rest can only be explained as the exploitation of the latter by the former. This meticulously researched analysis of the abiding repercussions of European colonialism on the continent of Africa has not only informed decades of scholarship and activism, it remains an indispensable study for grasping global inequality today.

The thing about colonists, when they come into and take over a usually far more primitive society, they also bring with them all their modernizations.
What did Africa have before they British came in? Mud huts and spears and animal hide shields, loincloths, dancing around a fire… pretty much the stone age.
And what did we bring them? Construction, schools, science, engineering, medicine, running water, electricity, basically: civilization.
Now they are complaining we “underdeveloped” them?? That’s hilarious. William Montague, a black man running for congress said: “You are not oppressed, you are lazy”.
Right on Target.

@Hogweed, it sounds like you are totally illiterate when it comes to economic history. Everything you say is just so blatanly false and chauvinistic - it really turns my organs inside out. Please don’t comment on subjects you obviously know nothing about. Maybe you can take this as an inspiration to educate yourself, though. Rodney is a great start - his work has remained a classic to this day.

It would be better to say, how Europe pulled Africa into the modern world.

Mike, Hogweed, Matty: nice to see the white trash/INCEL/MAGAt’s on here representing like the oh-so-PROUD Boys they are! Africa’s exploitation by Portugal, Britain, France, and Spain created what you call the “modern world”. Not that you would know that from studying, because none of you three are intellectuals in the slightest sense. Your Eurocentric view of world history beginning with whites is so laughable, if it wasn’t so outweighed by your idiocy; but the anonymity of the internet allows and fosters your type of cowardice

European “modernization” brought global warming to Africa
May 18th, 2024
Saying Europe “modernized” Africa means Europe looted an entire continent and turned its inhabitants into labouring slaves. Pretending like the meaning of Modernity is singular and inevitable is, ironically, big brow ridge energy, and totally unaware of the possibility that, if Africans could have made history on their own terms, the future would have looked a lot different. But we will never know, because their rich cultural history was, like their natural resources, taken from them and turned into a commodity. Books like these are a small push in the appropriate direction.
