These psychic and horror fictions - seven of them short-shorts - reveals Straub at his spellbinding best. Two tales (first installments of his Blue Rose trilogy), are linked to Koko and Mystery and exactingly probe the consequences of boyhood clashes with evil.
In “Blue Rose,” sadistic Harry Beevers, 10, hypnotizes and destroys his younger brother; the tale leaps ahead to the ironic verdict in Harry’s court-martial for wreaking atrocities in Vietnam.
In the outstanding “The Juniper Tree,” a novelist relives a harrowing, seductive summer when, at age seven, he was sexually molested in a movie house by drifter Stan, a seedy Alan Ladd lookalike.
“The Buffalo Hunter” fastidiously chronicles the fixations of a 35-year-old who numbs his fear of women by sucking his coffee and cognac from baby bottles.
In the ambitious gothic thriller/academic spoof “Mrs. God,” a fatuous professor is lured to a creepy English mansion crammed with grisly secrets to research the papers of his poet ancestress; dead babies provide a subtheme.
Wry and riveting, “A Short Guide to the City” fuses and parodies two genres: the self-congratulatory tourist blurb with a news alert on the “viaduct killer.”
PLEASE NOTE the story information about “The Juniper Tree”! It involves sexual abuse to a child. It is very disturbing. This story collection is a very intense one by Peter Straub.

benjytudor, Thank you for the heads up. I appreciate it. Normally I would just listen/read this anything with this author’s name on it.

You’re welcome — for the head’s up. I feel the same. All respect to Peter Straub, but that story is very disturbing.

Never listened to this author before. I am a person that actively reads/listens to/watches media that people are disturbed, offended or shocked by, and so when I read the comments, I downloaded it.
I went straight to “The Juniper Tree,” and I get why people were appalled and uncomfortable. This topic SHOULD be. This author isn’t creating some romanticised or sexualised fantasy involving a child and an adult. It’s a fairly real depiction of child sexual abuse, how a child can fall victim and the effects of the situation. Even more so, on a boy who grows up to be a man. Which is not usually the subject of discussion compared to female victims.
I know, I went through it myself.
I understand people are triggered by it, but telling everyone to skip it silences the stories of victims. It takes away their voices. Some victims use writing to take their power back, to expose these situations in fiction because it is healing and it teaches people the methods that predators use so that you can better protect your children in the future.
You shouldn’t ignore that these things happen. They do. Are they are appalling, they are disturbing. But sexual abuse of children is common, and to treat it like it’s this offensive, shameful, disgusting thing, does more harm to the victims. It makes them feel like something that was not of their control is horrifying, like just the fictional depiction should be removed from public access. It isolates them even more. It tells them that cannibals and serials killers can be written about by their stories/experiences are too offensive to be shared.
This short story is not from the POV of the predator. It’s not justifying it. It’s from the perspective of an author, writing about his life and this traumatising thing that happened to him. How his innocence was crushed. How he was manipulated by a stranger and yet felt like this person cared about him which is what happens. It’s horrible but fiction explores horrible things all the time. People read serial killer, horror books with graphic descriptions of hurting and killing people with enthusiasm but a short story about a boy who experiences something life changing and while it effects him, it doesn’t take over his entire life. It doesn’t destroy him and that is powerful.
If you are a victim and haven’t healed yet, I am sorry. Avoid this story, it will trigger you. For those that have healed or haven’t personally experienced it, at least give it the respect it deserves. You can fast forward the graphic scenes (they’re fairly short) but it is not just a story of abuse. There’s maybe 5-10 minutes involving the predator. It’s not the entire story.
