Before and after World War II, a serendipitous confluence of events created a healthy balance between the market and the polity - between the engine of capitalism and the egalitarian ideals of democracy. Under Roosevelt’s New Deal, unions and collective bargaining were legalized. Glass-Steagall reined in speculative finance. At Bretton Woods, a global financial system was devised explicitly to allow nations to manage capitalism.
Yet this golden era turned out to be lightning in a bottle. From the 1970s on, a power shift occurred, in which financial regulations were rolled back, taxes were cut, inequality worsened, and disheartened voters turned to far-right faux populism. Robert Kuttner lays out the events that led to the postwar miracle, and charts its dissolution all the way to Trump, Brexit, and the tenuous state of the EU.
Is today’s poisonous alliance of reckless finance and ultra-nationalism inevitable? Or can democracy find a way to survive?

The beautiful and unique concept of democracy is incompatible with unshackled capitalism.

Is there democracy outside of capitalism?

Oddly enough, the writer starts where most of the American concurrent problems of governance ensued (Roosevelt’s “New Deal”) and turns this raw policy into a what might have been hopeful kick off! Again and again, dressed up Marxism!

Democracy is one person, one vote. Capitalism is one dollar, one vote.

shackled capitalism. Limiting the scope of moneyed interests over individual voters collective will.

“one person, one vote” except some votes count more than others. like how Trump lost the popular vote in every election but still got to be #45, to our eternal shame.

Democracy in an era where citizens are easily manipulated by social media, MSM and politicians is simply a catchphrase.
As Plato said, “democracy is the worst form of government since no measures guarantee a rightfully elected leader has the virtues that articulate best interests of the masses”.

Can Democracy Survive Global Capitalism?
Perhaps a better question would be, Can democracy survive economic planning (socialism/communism)?
Looking at the contrast between free-market capitalism versus top-down, hierarchically controlled property, under the guise of “equality,” as they are laid out throughout history, democracy is associated with freedom, which means, freedom to choose, which is intrinsically tied to the free-market ideal; whether using some sort of currency or the bartering of goods and services.

No - Democracy cannot exist with capitalism. It never has.
The foundation of America was the destruction of the yeoman class the local aristocrats and oligarchs convinced or forced to join the revolutionary war, to restrict the vote, levers of power, and entire apparatus of capital and politics to the rich. The literal first moment after the war that a yeoman demanded democratic representation the former colonies sent in the army and killed them (the so-called Whiskey Riots or Shay’s Rebellion).
You can have democracy or you can have capitalism, you cannot have both.
That is why the US spent 70 years post WWII invading roughly half the world’s countries, murdering their people, their governments, and installing military fascist dictators. The USA killed half the population of Korea, and the dictator they installed in the South killed more than the dictator the war created in the North. The fact it’s more unpleasant to live in North Korea today than South Korea does not dismiss America’s genocide against the Korean people, nor decades of colonization.
