James Burnham’s 1964 classic, ‘Suicide of the West’, remains a startling account on the nature of the modern era.
It offers a profound, in-depth analysis of what is happening in the world today by putting into focus the intangible, often vague doctrine of American liberalism.
It parallels the loosely defined liberal ideology rampant in American government and institutions, with the flow, ebb, growth, climax and the eventual decline and death of both ancient and modern civilizations.
Its author maintains that western suicidal tendencies lie not so much in the lack of resources or military power, but through an erosion of intellectual, moral, and spiritual factors abundant in modern western society and the mainstay of liberal psychology.
Devastating in its relentless dissection of the liberal syndrome, this book will lead many liberals to painful self-examination, buttress the thinking conservative’s viewpoint, and incite others, no doubt, to infuriation.
None can ignore it.

Thanks so much! This will be the next book to read/listen on my ever growing to-read list.

People who believe the Earth was made 6,000 years ago by an invisible man aren’t in a position to accuse anyone of intellectual erosion.

I’m infuriated. Liberal democracy & the rights-based
legal order, properly construed, saw off the toxic extremes of left/right.
We are the complacent heroes for which we have waited. Extremist ideology always burns itself out.
We must just permit it to pass over us and thru us. And when it has gone past we will turn the inner eye 2 c its path. Where the extremist ideology has gone there will be nothing. Only we will remain.™

…and that should be “for whom” we have waited. I’m that infuriated, apparently.

Saw the last line of the blurb and decided to ignore it.

As an unabashed always Trumper, I support this strategically patient plan. No wait…I didn’t mean it *does Jazz hands. Oh the whomanatee!

I think that should be “Ever Trumper” Rosco, although it does have the added disadvantage of sounding like a chronic flatulence condition.
The grate man used to address people who had lost their homes by the action of terrible storms/flooding/etc. - and enjoin them to “Have a great time, everybody!” Now there was a chap who knew how to read a room.
To determine the meaning & destiny of polly-tics, we’ll have to squid game the hell outta dis, right up in here. Apparently, primary school kids are emulating squid game antics, so we’re well on the way.

Testing testing 123. I think I’m blocked with my real reply. Sorry.

It was almost assuredly beyond obscene. I’d keep an eye on that trajectory.

He helped a lot of people handing out bottles of water that day. Not-with-standing I’d even trust my comrades to not rate his disaster relief efforts as the worst ever. Darn it I’ll have to cover my eyes and ears Squid Game-wise. I hear the Netflix subs are trash and am waiting for fan subs. Looks Takeshi’s Castleicious.

It was Not-with-standing without the dashes lol.

People are saying that he handed the bucket to the driver, rather than putting it in the bed of the truck. He was wringing the event for parody pathos.
He used to speak to people from “forest nations” regarding proper forest management, and I was puzzling over what “forest nations” do I know (coz I’m fierce smart altogether) and I could only think of Endor. Then I thought, that can’t be right. If he’d really met with Ewoks there would have been pictures in the periodicals. Of himself with Wicket & the lads, y’know.
October 19th, 2021
Not-with-standing, comparatively speaking of course, one could here, be easily be forgiven for adding a fourth four-une aspect to the Triune consubstantial nature of the Baby J. The breadth of his Acts from predicting Osama bin Laden’s attack, to the failure of a female led Ghostbusters movie, breathe life into the hope for a church with universal appeal, but that would be an ecumenical matter.
October 19th, 2021
The female-led Ghostbusters movie was actually very good (although I haven’t seen it, to be sharply blunt). I was disappointed that the recent Dune adaptation didn’t feature all-male Bene Gesserit. Shouldn’t they have got past all that gender malarkey ‘n twattle by the year 10191? Somebody should really do something about that - so, who you gonna call? The Padishah Emperor!
October 19th, 2021
Caesar, you ok buddy?
Honestly who was this book written for? Everyone knows the sun has set on the American Empire. Really we deserve it, we sat by while our ruling class terrorized the world so a cabal of bankers could own every countries money.

Fold space and see em then. I’ve been buying you the expensive Arrakis fish flakes like you asked. Still haven’t gotten around to writing to your parents though. I know they must still think I ate your brain from when they found your little body, but I drink in the same pub as them so its a bit awkward, you understand *pats bowl and promises self to better by you after the next big match probably..

@jonwb - Ah, sure, I’m grand all the same, can’t complain. Just a little infuriated.
I’d like to get my hands on some of that spice, Rosco, if you could hook us up.
October 19th, 2021
…coz you seem to have started on the space spice without us. That’s bogarting the Melange, if ever I saws it.

I remember when talking politics in church was a serious faux pas.
I was a teen when Sunday shopping came into effect & I could see & feel things changing right away.
It was like commerce poisoned the last thing we had that was sacred. In addition to church we used to have family dinners on Sundays. That was the time we had to hang out with our cousins. Still tight with a couple of them.
I have not been for 2 years when my aunt died.
I’ve seen video of mega churches where the so called pastor talks like a used car salesman & preaches a disgusting thing called the ‘prosperity gospel’ which is a toxic corruption that their huge congregation loves. It’s truly unbelievable.

Sorry @apnea no malice intended. The world is moving fast for us all. Sadly the good times had enough of an undercurrent of really not too nice things that a bit of a shake up was probably needed. Even an atheist would say we’re doing OK for a ball of atoms so fingers crossed things should improve one way or the other.

Clearly this was written by someone who doesn’t know a damned thing about anthropology.
The entire raison d’etre of government from the moment human beings started living together in settlements has been the equitable distribution of resources.
“Those people over there have an abundance of crop yield, these people over here had an infestation of parasites in their crops, so let’s make sure the surplus crops from the first group get distributed to the second group. Therefore, we all thrive.”
Literally, that’s it. That is the origin story of government as we know it. This is very basic, community-college level Anthropology 101 information.
The breakdown of society begins when the group with a surplus of resources starts hoarding them from the group with a deficit, and particularly when the group with a surplus starts using them as leverage to coerce the group with a deficit. At that point, the surplus group has an incentive to continue hoarding resources from the deficit group, driving the deficit group deeper and deeper into resource-poverty while available resources languish unused. The deficit group becomes more and more desperate, leading to theft, retaliation, and the violent overthrow (or the violent quelling of an attempted overthrow) of the surplus group.
Seriously, how does anyone who has no clue what the foundations of society and government are have the audacity to presume to pontificate on the destiny of society or any business accusing anyone of intellectual erosion?
Personally, I say let’s roll out the tumbrils. It’s past time.
October 20th, 2021
Aren’t these difinitive foundations of society and government just a bit of clever well educated pontificating also? During sessions with my Tarot Card reader I’ve been remembering my past lives and it turns out I just let the eunuchs proceed with their boring plan so I could do more sex on the women. Also the first farmer guy told me the other farmer shouldn’t have built his farm in tornado ally. Maybe the nature of reality is dialectical and we will be glad of all the wars when we have to send Bruce Willis to do climate change on the bad asteroid. I will be glad because I will get to keep doing that thing I like to do on the women.
October 21st, 2021
No doubt the women will be equally thrilled. How come all you tarot lads are always Ottoman Sultanas & never their eunuch flunkies? For the eunuch, this is the unkindest cut of all, I feel.
October 21st, 2021
You suggest a fine point. Rosco is no longer friends with Tarot Card reader. Rosco and eunuc.. (*picks up phone to call number on screen) FLEX TAPE® are now best friends.
October 22nd, 2021
FLEX TAPE® has notorious intimacy issues, so it’ll never last. Because it just won’t stick around (pulls gurning Les Dawson face).
There used to be one of those tarot reading sorts on 98FM. It was hilarious - all she needed was your b’day & you were golden. She may have also wanted you to get “a more detailed reading” by committing financial suicide on her premium line.
Accurate, ethereal ghost voice: “You will waste a s***load of money. You’ll be on beans for a week - Ooooooh!” (I hope I didn’t use my accurate, spectral orgasm voice there by mistake…)
October 22nd, 2021
Ah Lez. I don’t need to call a premium Tarot reader to tell me he would be a regular guest on the Trevor Noah show if he were around today. I’ll have to start copying his style if I want to make it big.
October 23rd, 2021
If anything, Les Dawson would be too good for those shows. Les was pure, creative class, Rosco. (He wrote literary fiction as well, dontcha no?) You never would’ve caught Les with that egotistical, monstrous, metre-long microphone what Terry Wogan was deceived into appearing with. Fame just means longer, more boastful microphones to some poor souls.
Somebody said of Les that in order to play the piano that badly, you must first be a seriously good piano player. The defence rests, m’lud.

I just actually read the book and the author is amazing at demonstrating succinctly the ideals behind the situation we are in now.
