When the COVID-19 pandemic swept across the globe in 2020, it created an unprecedented impact, greater than the aftermath of 9/11 or the global financial crisis. But out of such disruption can come a new way of thinking, and in this superb new book, former UK prime minister Gordon Brown offers his solutions to the challenges we face in 2021 and beyond.
In the book, he states that there are seven major global problems we must address: global health, climate change and environmental damage, nuclear proliferation, global financial instability, the humanitarian crisis and global poverty, the barriers to education and opportunity, and global inequality and its biggest manifestation, global tax havens. Each one presents an immense challenge that requires an urgent global response and solution. All should be on the world’s agenda today. None can be solved by one nation acting on its own, but all can be addressed if we work together as a global community.
However, Brown remains optimistic that, despite the many obstacles in our way, we will find a path to regeneration via a new era of global order. Yes, there is a crisis of globalisation, but we are beginning to see the means by which it might be resolved. Crises create opportunities and having two at once shouldn’t just focus the mind, it might even be seen as giving greater grounds for hope. In Seven Ways to Change the World, Brown provides an authoritative and inspirational pathway to a better future that is essential listening for policy makers and concerned citizens alike.

Truly astonishing how some people have the nerve to underestimate and insult other people’s intelligence!

apollo I would add raise interest rates and return to sound money as well.

The author is a buffoon who is in close competition with Theresa May for the title of worst P.M. in the last century, the less said about his stint of Chancellor of the Exchequer the better.

@apollo60 don’t forget the concentration camps for people who don’t agree with you.

daenigma100 - Typical leftist. You are so concerned with these issues, that you can’t even spell the author’s name correctly in the description.

Jack_Milad-The Concentration Camps are favored by aoc and the Democrats. You know, that organization that has its roots in Nazi Germany

@apollo60 congrats, you’ve said something so ridiculous that I genuinely have no response.
When you divorced from reality, it appears you lost custody of your brain.

> The Concentration Camps are favored by aoc and the Democrats…
On one hand, and as of this moment, AOC and the Democrats are not exactly running around speaking openly about the concentration camps for the opposition. On the other hand, if history is any indication, under certain conditions things like that tend to happen and progress naturally, following their own internal logic.

further to previous:
“It’s just a little cens@rship, G@ogle, F@cebook, and Tw@tter say. So we put you in virtual time-out or purge your voice from the internet for “spreading hate” — what’s the harm? It’s just a little citizen designation, Attorney General Garland says. What could possibly go wrong with legally defining half of the American populace as “domestic violent extremists” because they voted for Donald Trump or as “white supremacists” because they have the wrong color skin? Conservatives are just too “touchy” these days. Nothing bad ever happens when a certain class of people are designated as enemies of the State for supporting the “wrong” ideas — nope, nothing to see here.
Except, it never, ever ends with just censorship or labeling. What starts with burning words — whether on paper or in digital space — always ends with burning people. Those most eager to start the fires learn quickly that in order to truly eradicate ideas, they must go after their “root causes” — the people who have those ideas and write them down in the first place. Pretending there are thousands of genders out there seems a little too crazy to take seriously. But “politics is downstream from culture,” and when the “madness of crowds” takes over, blood is never too far behind.”

Gordon Brown is a blowhard, who is trying so hard to seem relevant. He ain’t.

apollo60 is spot on (English-English for “exactly right”) and to his no. 5 I would add “and stop paying billions to every Tom, Dick and Harry company who are jumping on the climate change theory.
The climate has been changing in cycles since time began. Hundreds of years ago, Alaska and Russia were joined together by permanent ice. Two thousand years ago the Sahara was lush with vegetation, in the 3rd century AD Eastern Europe never had a winter as we know it… We happen to be in a warm cycle now and it is the arrogance of man to believe that he can change it by funneling billions into madcap schemes, oppressive laws and (as in Germany) branding “climate change skeptics” as criminals.

@Helvetica
Humans accelerating climate change to irreversible and catastrophic levels is happening. And it’s happening faster than it has at any point in history other than a mass extinction level event. Facts don’t care about your opinions. Decrying experts and mandating that people who have no knowledge in the field have as loud a voice is quintessentially British. The BBC giving equal time to opposing views regardless of how stupid those views might be is something you’ve grown up with.
Trying to defund (or should we just say ‘cancel’ since that’s what it is) scientists because you don’t like or don’t understand the problem is not very clever, to say the least.

@Jack_Milad
Climate change has been observed on other planets going on as well. The idea that this is of humanities doing is so arrogant and unfounded. If you separate the politics and realize that dedicating all your time to “climate change” prevents real conservation from happening. Everyone would rather rake in the money just for patting themselves on the back for crying about carbon taxes while China dumps billions into the air instead of I don’t know, cleaning up a beach, fighting immigration and drug cartels for destroying our forest. The list goes on. Climate alarmism does NOTHING to help anyone except those raking in the money.
June 23rd, 2021
@wheresmycannon quite the opposite, the people taking in money at the moment tend to be the fossil fuel industries. Who would be massively inconvenienced if we tried to reduce the amount of chemicals pumped into the atmosphere.
Sounds like you’ve read a lot from people denouncing climate change without actually bothering to learn about climate change. We’re pretty damn sure that this isn’t normal, it’s happening too fast. And it directly correlates to the industrial revolution. There’s literally no other reasonable explanation.
In short, you are ignorant and uninformed, and mankind would benefit greatly from people like you shutting up.
