Unabridged
In the tradition of Bertrand Russell’s Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris’ The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos.
With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which the heavens are replaced by the Hubble Telescope’s awesome view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty and symmetry of the double helix.
Complete and unabridged edition, narrated by the author.

This is an *excellent* book, I cannot recommend giving it a listen enough!

Thank you for this truthful book!

This is probably the best of Hitchens, and was essential reading even before Donald Trump.

Well, it’s difficult to be so gushing as all that. On basic facts, he makes an enormous number of errors.
He confuses the histories of the 1st & 4th crusades, & erroneously asserts that Myles Coverdale & John Wycliffe were burned alive.
They actually died of old age.
Of course, all of the errors remain intact in subsequent editions. Hitch fully appreciated the capacity & erudition of his fans. And why would he not?
David Bentley Hart reviewed the book as a “rollicking burlesque, without so much as a pretense of logical order or scholarly rigor,” & “On matters of simple historical and textual fact, moreover, Hitchens’ book is so extraordinarily crowded with errors that one soon gives up counting them.”

Indeed, Wycliffe was burned after he died. He was sentenced at Constance, and again at Blackfriars, but managed to disappear, and by the time anyone found him he was already dead.
But then, forty years later they decided they had better dig him up and burn him anyway. (It’s how Christians got their kicks back then).
I suppose a half-truth is better than no truth at all.

@caesar - You still observe everything through your god-spectacles. Poor dear.

Well, I was an adolescent atheist as well, illo, so I got both sets of spectacles (some never grow out of that prydeful adolescent phase, y’know!).
Is it not an equal claim to observe that you still view everything through your anti-theist spectacles? Poor dear?
How’s that cat, btw?

No, that defence is a failed contrivance. To deploy, inter alia, the fake, weaponised “historical” point that Coverdale & Wycliffe were both burned “alive” - & to retain it in subsequent editions (knew his audience) is a fully intentional falsehood.
That would be a definitive “no truth.”
Unless he meant that John was burned “alive” while dead? (Which would qualify as anti-theist truthiness, I suppose.)
Recall also that anti-theists “got their kicks” by starving entire populations to death - amongst many other horrors & savageries. And that wasn’t 600 years ago, but within living memory.
If you like that kind of thing…

Does communist atheism in this book get a pass? As well as all the deaths from western pharmacopeia? Probably. If so, this book is laughable.

So the right way to listen to this book, for the readers who are gonna download it, would be to read the criticism, and fact check it. I suppose that’s important to have an educated opinion.

Even bad bks can be useful, Mastram, because they might prompt us to research, learn & critique. All the better to expose avoidable errors & weaponised falsehoods.
