Set 300 years before the events in A Song of Ice and Fire, Fire and Blood is the definitive history of the Targaryens in Westeros as told by Archmaester Gyldayn, and chronicles the conquest that united the Seven Kingdoms under Targaryen rule through to the Dance of the Dragons: the Targaryen civil war that nearly ended their dynasty forever.
The thrilling history of the Targaryens comes to life in this masterly work by the author of A Song of Ice and Fire, the inspiration for HBO’s Game of Thrones.
With all the fire and fury fans have come to expect from internationally best-selling author George R.R. Martin, this is the first volume of the definitive two-part history of the Targaryens in Westeros.
Centuries before the events of A Game of Thrones, House Targaryen, the only family of dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria, took up residence on Dragonstone. Fire and Blood begins their tale with the legendary Aegon the Conqueror, creator of the Iron Throne, and goes on to recount the generations of Targaryens who fought to hold that iconic seat, all the way up to the civil war that nearly tore their dynasty apart.
What really happened during the Dance of the Dragons? Why was it so deadly to visit Valyria after the Doom? What were Maegor the Cruel’s worst crimes? What was it like in Westeros when dragons ruled the skies? These are but a few of the questions answered in this essential chronicle, as related by a learned maester of the Citadel. Listeners have glimpsed small parts of this narrative in such volumes as The World of Ice & Fire but now, for the first time, the full tapestry of Targaryen history is revealed.
With all the scope and grandeur of Gibbons’ The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, Fire and Blood is the ultimate game of thrones, giving listeners a whole new appreciation for the dynamic, often bloody and always fascinating history of Westeros.

Bloody brilliant, LoganB! Forgot about this one, it has to be better than The World of Ice & Fire. More like Edward Gibbon with dragons. After these, hopefully George will get back to work.

Logan B, thank you for the post. Although I find myself very conflicted as to whether or not I want to listen to this. I read Game of Thrones when it first came out back when I was in college and loved it.
However, with the description saying this is a two-part history, I don’t know if I believe Martin will ever finish it.
With GoT’s success, Martin probably feed HBO this as prequel material, and now is cashing in on a book deal. But, like GoT, HBO will have to finish the story.

Thanks for the share. i actually had it and chose not to share this one. I don’t recommend it, unless you want to hear a stripped history book. it’s basically just names and brief histories of past targarians. He even destroys the whole Stark figuring out about the incest kids. they are all mixed blood and kids of targarian and barathian end up with silver hair. plus the houses are so mixed together with this book, it should all just be one house after a thousand years. hope it helps a little.

@caesar963, I have good news: It has been revealed that GRRM is right now in his “bunker”, a cabin he has somewhere, where he goes to finish his books. Apparently, the last time he secluded himself in the “bunker”, writing “A Dance with Dragons”, he finished it in about a month…

@GenghisKhan128, I don’t understand your criticism.
“I don’t recommend it, unless you want to hear a stripped history book.”
That’s exactly what it is and what it is INTENDED to be: a fictional, in-universe history book about the Targaryens, from Aegon’s Conquest to the aftermath of the Dance of the Dragons, giving readers a far more in-depth understanding of Westeros’ history under Targaryen rule.
—————————–
“it’s basically just names and brief histories of past targarians.”
Well, “brief” is relative. About 50 pages are dedicated to Aegon the Conqueror alone. Over 50 others to his two sons. 236 pages to his grandson, the Old King. 51 pages to Viserys I and the events leading up to the terrible civil war that is the Dance of the Dragons. 178 pages dedicated to the civil war itself and another 138 pages to the Dance’s aftermath and the early (regency-controlled) reign of the first post-civil war king, Aegon III (the Dragonbane). Also, those names were referenced and mentioned in the main series, here they are expanded and explained (such as how the City Watch of King’s Landing became known as the “Gold Cloaks” and who Rhaenyra, a character mentioned several times throughout the books, including in a memorable occasion by Stannis to Davos, was). Thus, ironically, while in the main series they really are mostly “names”, here they are characters.

“He even destroys the whole Stark figuring out about the incest kids. they are all mixed blood and kids of targarian and barathian end up with silver hair. plus the houses are so mixed together with this book, it should all just be one house after a thousand years. hope it helps a little.”
That’s nonsense. This history is merely the backstory of the main series. In fact, it follows nicely with medieval history (that is, it is historically accurate), where nobles married into other noble families, without ending their respective houses. Or were you under the impression that incest is the norm in all the noble houses? Indeed, that the noble houses “mix” is easily provable: Ned’s and Jon’s wives are Tully, and Robert’s is Lannister. Did you question while reading (or watching) “A Game of Thrones” why, if the aforementioned marriages existed, did Houses Lannister and Tully still exist, despite marriages to other families?
Also, if you pay attention to the books, it is made VERY clear that Robert Baratheon is king because (well, at least in Ned Stark’s eyes) he has a blood claim to the throne (his grandmother was a Targaryen). Moreover, the companion books (this one and “World of Ice and Fire”) have shown that the first Baratheon in Westeros (Orys, I think) was Aegon’s second-in-command, best friend, and possible half-brother (meaning the Westerosi Baratheon line may have always had Targaryen blood). Indeed, the books often reference characters and events that this book and “The World of Ice and Fire” elaborates on.
Finally, to the specific claim that is “destroys” Ned figuring out the bastardry of Cersei’s children. That is absolutely not true. Ned learnt about it (following Jon Arryn’s investigations, after the suspicious Stannis’ request) because of their phenotypic qualities, that is, their observable genes. Baratheons have dominant genes, which means that their children (almost) always inherit their traits. However, Cersei’s THREE children, all had the comparably weaker Lannister traits, which had significant implications about their parentage.
To my knowledge, the only clear historical example (at least that would appear in this book) of a Baratheon-Targaryen child inheriting Valyrian traits is the Queen Who Never Was, whose father was Valyrian and and whose mother was half-Valyrian, half-Baratheon, meaning she was 3/4 Valyrian, which hardly affects Ned’s (and Jon’s and Stannis’, before him) conclusions that Cersei’s children are bastards.
———————-
PS: If this book contradicts stated “facts” (historical ones, mostly) in the main series, it is likelier that the characters stating the “facts” are historically-ignorant and this book (written by an academic and historian) is right or closer to the truth (besides comments about magic and the supernatural, which are (deliberately by GRRM) dismissive, since Westerosi scholars are dismissive of those subjects). This is all part of the realism (the real-life feel) that GRRM tries to give “A Song of Ice and Fire”…
November 28th, 2018
Thanks for the good news, Chipy - but you know too much. Are you, in reality, the beleaguered GRRM? Avoiding work, once again? Cut the wi-fi to the bunker!
November 28th, 2018
First, GRRM (who is definitely not me!) hasn’t posted anything in his blog for almost two weeks (he, not me, last commented on Stan Lee’s (one of HIS, not “my”, most important influences) death).
And second…
Curses! They found out! To my other secret bunker (which definitely doesn’t have wi-fi either)!
*runs off into the woods, but quickly gets tired and has to mount a carriage drawn by rounseys*
November 29th, 2018
It’d take the full power of some very brave rounseys to bear the weight of that mighty scribe.
So (Winds of) Winter is finally coming. If he handed it over to Stephen King, Steve would have the entire series finished between breakfast and lunch. It’s not as if George engages the services of an editor, what with those weighty tomes.
Is this one any good? Is it up to the usual snuff (movie!) or standard?
December 27th, 2018
As a huge GRRM fan, I am enjoying it so far, though it is a little dry. It’s probably not for everyone.
Is there a way to upload the .pdf file of the illustrations included with the original digital audiobook download? They’re mentioned in small print on the cover…That would be awesome. Thanks for the up!

File appears to be corrupted or has missing chapters. Splitting the file produced 23 chapters but online chapter lists show 2 chapters not found in the file

File IS corrupted. I’ve compared it against a PDF of the book and there is at least one chapter missing.
