A new assessment of the West’s colonial record.
In the wake of the dissolution of the Soviet empire in 1989, many believed that we had arrived at the ‘End of History’—that the global dominance of liberal democracy had been secured forever. Now, however, with Russia rattling its sabre on the borders of Europe and China rising to challenge the post-1945 world order, the liberal West faces major threats.
These threats are not only external. Especially in the Anglosphere, the ‘decolonisation’ movement corrodes the West’s self-confidence by retelling the history of European and American colonial dominance as a litany of racism, exploitation and massively murderous violence.
Nigel Biggar tests this indictment, addressing the crucial questions in eight chapters: was the British Empire driven primarily by greed and the lust to dominate? Should we speak of ‘colonialism and slavery’ in the same breath, as if they were identical? Was the empire essentially racist? How far was it based on the theft of land? Did it involve genocide? Was it driven fundamentally by the motive of economic exploitation? Was undemocratic colonial government necessarily illegitimate? and, Was the empire essentially violent, and its violence pervasively racist and terroristic?
Biggar makes clear that, like any other long-standing state, the British Empire involved elements of injustice, sometimes appalling. On occasions, it was culpably incompetent and presided over moments of dreadful tragedy.
Nevertheless, from the early 1800s, the empire was committed to abolishing the slave trade in the name of a Christian conviction of the basic equality of all human beings. It ended endemic inter-tribal warfare, opened local economies to the opportunities of global trade, moderated the impact of inescapable modernisation, established the rule of law and liberal institutions such as a free press and spent itself in defeating the murderously racist Nazi and Japanese empires in the Second World War.
As encyclopaedic in historical breadth as it is penetrating in analytical depth, Colonialism offers a moral inquest into the colonial past, forensically contesting damaging falsehoods and thereby helping to rejuvenate faith in the West’s future.

Colonialism was the method of spreading civilization and technology to primitive and less developed nations. Wasn’t pretty, but it brought countries out of the lowest living conditions to having things like schools, science, medicine, economy, engineering and so much more to people who lived in mud huts and had only spears and bows, all the way up to the late 1800’s. There was bad, but there was way more good.

hogweed
might have been better to leave them alone

@Hogweed Just because they didn’t have the same type of civilisation that the colonialists had doesn’t mean they weren’t developed any any less complex in their own ways. Many great civilisations of been wiped out/decimated all in the the process of being ‘civilised’. It’s the very definition of hubris.

prior to colonization in Africa, they had not yet invented the wheel, they had no written language, and they had no structures taller than two stories. that’s not an argument for colonization, just a fact that is rarely mentioned.

Yeah… stopping tribal genocide cannibalism abolishing slavery and bringing technology as the wheel and the plough…. What basterds the British are

“prior to colonization in Africa, they had not yet invented the wheel”.412whistle you sir need to stop smoking that white crack. Africans most likely invented the wheel 200e3 years ago, they also invented humans.

It bequeaths an utterly toxic legacy, of racist divide & conquer, which peoples must recover from (unfortunately, I know whereof).
The benefit is to the colonial power, entailing a corrosive destruction of indigenous culture in order to streamline expedient colonial administration. Natives are sometimes infantilised, often dehumanised, & frequently “removed.” Any structures which are established are not designed for the betterment of peoples, but only that vectors of power may be more efficiently installed & operated.

Watch this book get promoted in all the “right” places. Boris Johnson will love this book. Nigel Farage will love this book.
It will appeal to anyone who gets a warm and cosy feeling when someone comes along to let white people off the hook. It doesn’t have to be true, it just has to exist.

As someone that has finished the book and attended a QA with Nigel. Sad to say it’s a fiction completely, during said QA he was asked did he speak or visit any former colonies. Nigel hasn’t visited one and has based his opinions on his education/indoctrination and senior diplomats he has encountered. How Nigel squares away any of the atrocities with his faith is beyond me. Furthermore he paints a picture of governance as service missing the point the invader is occupying the nation to strip its wealth and subdue its population from advancing, A point he proves by explaining the British had less than 1600 men to govern the whole of central Africa 13.8 million, he paints this as a positive instead of a country so downtrodden and divided instilled with Christianity lie they are children of God and aren’t prisoners but members of theCommonwealth

Except for Russia, right FreeP tankie? Oh no, wait, that’s different because…
(And all the other genocidal ideologies & regimes you toxic loons slavishly support; & your hatred of the Irish, whom you somehow imagine colonised all over the map. You see “Irish imperialists” & “anarchists” everywhere. Classic “blame the victim” garbage, because your ideological lunacy is available in all flavours. Which dovetails perfectly with your “The Jeeewz!” con theories. Are they hiding in your cornflakes again, heinrich?)

A lot of niggas here whining. EVERY fucking civilisation and empire in the entire world history was colonising and practising slavery. The West was one of the first to abolish it and leave its colonies.
