Everyone has heard of Erdogan: Turkey’s bullish, mercurial president is the original postmodern populist. Around the world, other strongmen are now following the path that he has blazed. For the first time, Erdogan Rising tells the inside story of how a democracy on the fringe of Europe has succumbed to dictatorship.
Hannah Lucinda Smith, Turkey correspondent with The Times of London, has witnessed all that has befallen Turkey and the wider region since the onset of the Arab Spring. From the frontlines of the wars in Syria and Eastern Turkey, through the refugee crisis and the attempted coup against Erdogan, she traces how chaos in the Middle East has blown back on a country that was once heralded as the model of Islamic democracy. With access to key insiders, she also paints a vivid portrait of Erdogan’s descent from flawed democrat to staunch authoritarian.
Erdogan Rising is a story rooted in Smith’s first-hand experiences of a country divided, told through the eyes of a rich cast of characters. She journeys into the Turkey where Erdogan commands a following so devoted they compose songs in his honour, adorn their houses with his picture, and lay down their lives to keep him in power. But on the other side - sometimes just a few hundred metres down the road - she also meets the Turks who are mourning the loss of the country they once knew.

Once they secure power, they can never safely relinquish it.

The funny thing is that these stable geniuses think they live forever. And plan accordingly.

You can’t mean the pulchritudinous Sanna Marin?!
October 17th, 2020
You’re despicable. Sanna Marin is probably the best prime minister we’ve had since almost never. And yes, a sight for sore eyes, too.
And since we’re playing with words, are you perhaps a tad misogynistic?

-and here’s a quote from a movie I watched last night: God created whiskey to keep the Irish from taking over the world.
Sorry, were you a Scot?

Misogyna-what?! I was celebrating Sanna! I’m merely surprised that you Vikings are so civilised.
On whiskey wars, even our spelling is in conflict. The Scots spell it without the “e” (whisky) - whereas we spell it properly.

Thank you daenigma100.
Democratic institutions need to get a handle on how democratic countries can succumb to dictatorship. Listen to the valid concerns of their constituents and work to deliver a more just and cohesive society. Cutting out the corruption and favour of the more powerful among them would help!

This book is pretty fascinating if you don’t know much about the history of Turkey. It covers the continuing influence or Kemal Ataturk and Erdogan’s opposition to his secular vision. As well as “the Syria problem” and Turkey’s future.
It gets a little too journalistic and “dramatic” for my tastes at times but it is full of good information.
Thanks for the upload!
