The imagination on display here is awe inspiring. Shea is one of the most underrated writers I’ve ever read. His prose is baroque and sophisticated, yet easily digestible and filled with wild flourishes of bizarre creatures and detailed descriptions of exotic locales (including possibly the best description of hell since Dante’s Inferno).
The 2 main characters are charismatic and very entertaining. Brilliant flashes of humor compliment the story without derailing it.
From the underworld to a demon sea, complete with nightmarish denizens of the deep, to a horrifying vampire plant, to a monolithic alien goddess and more, Shea knocks it out of the park with this series.
