Britain’s private, fee-paying schools are institutions where children from affluent families have their privileges further entrenched through a high-quality, richly resourced education. There is an irrefutable link between private schools and life’s gilded path: private school to top university to top career. Engines of Privilege contends that, in a society that mouths the virtues of equality of opportunity, of fairness and of social cohesion, the educational apartheid separating private schools from our state schools deploys our national educational resources unfairly and inefficiently; blocks social mobility; reproduces privilege down the generations; and underpins a damaging democratic deficit in our society.
Intrinsic to any vision of the future of Britain has to be the nature of our educational system. Yet the quality of conversation on the issue of private education remains surprisingly sterile, patchy and highly subjective.
Francis Green and David Kynaston carefully examine options for change while drawing on the valuable lessons of history. Accessible, evidence-based and inclusive, Engines of Privilege aims to kick-start a long overdue national debate. Clear, vigorous prose is combined with forensic analysis to powerful effect, illuminating the painful contrast between the importance of private schools in British society and the near-absence of serious, policy-shaping debate.

If Alexander Boris de Pfeffel Johnson and Jacob William Rees-Mogg are products of the schools concerned (which are actually called PUBLIC schools for some arcane reason), then that system has a hell of a lot to answer for.

Do you really feel obliged to follow every American thickness wherever it takes you? Try something different!

@marcodiluce
Who is the “you” that you refer to?
If me, I think this is only the second title I’ve commented on, and my comment was solely on the topic of the book itself.
And in any case which American thickness are you thinking of - there’s a huge choice.

Interesting subject. I know a Kenyan woman who married a computer genius from Michigan, who moved to England and put their kids into one of these schools of the privileged, where one kid was actually flown in via helecopter.

I come from an immigrant family that ran away from a war and landed in a new country with $600 in our pocket, a family of 6 where only two were adults capable of obtaining a job. I was one of the kids, and yes, I got my first job at the age of 10 and at the age of 14 I had an actual professional job, starting a career in IT.
Nowadays I’m making enough to be able to send my own kids to a private school, and give them the start in life I’ve never had. That means that just a generation removed from piss-poor immigrants, my children will have that same “privilege”, because I worked hard to give tham that.
So who the hell are you to deny my children that privilege and try and drag them down? Why would anyone study and work hard, if they are denied the ability to provide a better future for their children? Is that the point of these leftie bleedin’ hearts - drag everyone down to a common mediocre level, make everyone poor and then rule over a grey mob?

@bugagagashenki weird how you’re apparently wealthy enough to pay £50,000+ for schooling at Eaton but you’re hanging out on a site like this one.
Even weirder that every single other instance of your username seems to indicate that you live in Russia.
