From the bubonic plague to theoretical pathogens on other worlds, a sweeping look at the past, present, and future of mass infections—and how we battle them.
In this panoramic and up-to-date account, we learn how the Black Death, smallpox, the 1918 influenza pandemic, and other great epidemics have not only led to enormous suffering and mass death but have also contributed to the fall of empires and changed the course of history. We also discover how new infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and COVID-19 emerge—and how we wage war against them.
Humanity has struck back at the microbes: antibiotics and new vaccines have saved millions of lives. But the battle with these relentless, silent enemies is far from won. We face increasing threats from new and unavoidable pandemics, antibiotic resistance, and even potential extraterrestrial microbes. Duel Without End is a fascinating journey through the long history of infection, from the dawn of life to humanity’s future exploration of deep space.

Thanks heaps

The book’s premise appears based on the outmoded dichotomy between human and microbe (in my opinion an extension of the harmful Judaeo-Christian doctrine of man existing outside of nature). Rather than “dueling with microbes”, for a very large part our bodies are made up of them, without which we couldn’t exist.

Thamus I bet you would think different if you shat yourself to death due to a number of infections or died of the black death - ever read a description of that one?
IMO the eradication of small pox is the biggest achievement of the human race. If you consider ending death & suffering from the single biggest killer pathogen.
‘40 Years in a Post-Smallpox World’
“By no means novel, smallpox is the biggest killer in world history, causing an estimated 400 million cumulative deaths over 3,000 years—300 million in the 20th century alone.”

I’m aware the are many microbes we need to survive, but there’s more than a few we can live without and should happily drive to extinction.
Goomer, thanks a bunch.

Smallpox is still knocking around. It was in facilities in the US & Russia. The Russians stored theirs in a bioweapons lab which had a fire & exploded.
