A chilling story of human depravity and ultimate justice, told for the
first time by an eyewitness court reporter for the Nuremberg war crimes
trial of Nazi doctors. This is the account of 23 men torturing and killing
by experiment in the name of scientific research and patriotism. The
book includes trial transcripts that have not been easily available
to the general public and previously unpublished photographs used as
evidence in the trial.
The author describes the experience of being
in bombed-out, dangerous, post-war Nuremberg, where she lived for two
years while working on the trial. Once a Nazi sympathiser tossed bombs
into the dining room of the hotel where she lived moments before she
arrived for dinner. She takes us into the courtroom to hear the dramatic
testimony and see the reactions of the defendants to the proceedings.
The doctors tell of experiments involving depriving concentration camp
inmates of oxygen; freezing them; injecting them with malaria, typhus,
and jaundice; amputating healthy limbs; forcing them to drink seawater
for weeks at a time; and other horrors.

Still more porn …but this is porn for the most f*cked-up among us. Seriously, this is not history. This is porn for people who fetishize Nazism, and/or enjoy gore (the real kind, not made in Hollywood).

Hmmm. Maybe I spoke too soon. Having now looked up the author, I realize that pornographic fetishism is almost certainly not why she wrote this. She was a court reporter at the Nuremberg Trials and was given the perhaps-traumatizing task of transcribing the Nazis’ detailed documentation of their experiments.

It’s about:
- her preparation for the proceedings
- the brief description of the experiments
- the defendants talk about what they did (some try to avert blame others openly admit to the experiments)
- the victims tell what happened to them
- verdicts
- later events
It’s not glorification at all. The whole work is very evenly peaced out, nothing gets too much attention and it’s certainly not direspectful. It gives about the right amount of information so one can have a picture as to what happened. Why it happened. Also, it’s a hard question whether results from the experiemtns (where valuable - not always the case at all) should be used or not.
By the way: my personal opinion is that results should absolutely be used. I mean, if somone experimented on me then I’d want my death/suffering to at least mean something. It doesn’t have to mean “it’s right to do these things” at all.

People like Skay are annoying. They speak down on us proles from their percieved position of moral authority. You have an interest in WW2? Oh, you must be consuming “WW2 porn” and war fetishization. This type of condemnation of the documentation of history reminds me of Orwellian “doublethink”.
