This 1902 essay collection by the Russian naturalist and anarchist philosopher Peter Kropotkin explore the role of mutually beneficial cooperation and reciprocity in the animal kingdom and human societies. It is an argument against theories of social Darwinism that emphasize competition and survival of the fittest, and against the romantic views of writers such as Jean-Jacques Rousseau who thought that cooperation was motivated by universal love.

Not to be too nightmarishly Hobbesian, or nuthin’ but, as Tennyson observed “nature, red in tooth and claw.” As rotten doors go, Rousseau & social Darwinism are altogether too easily kicked in.
Mutual aid is indeed a factor in evolution; but only a factor - and certainly not a determinant factor.

Thanks a lot.

Thanks daenigma. My first and only acquaintance with Kropotkin’s writings came about 40-odd years ago when I acquired the eleventh edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica and read the article on Anarchism. I found to my surprise that the editors had gone to its most prominent living advocate, Peter (by his demand no longer Prince) Kropotkin. I discovered later that this was not at all uncommon for the EB, and spent many hours of discovery of such gems. Anyway, I look forward to listening to more of this idiosyncratic but rational thinker.

@daenigma100: when filling in the upload form, can you please include the bitrate (read off from mediainfo, e.g.) and the narrator (usually announced at the beginning if not elsewhere documented).
Thanks

Great upload!
@caesar963: Your comment sets up a straw-man whose only elucidating quality is to demonstrate that you’ve never read the material you are attempting to critique.

Dr. Ray Peat talks a lot about this man. So I am quite excited to learn more.

…er, straw man? I wonder, where is this chimerical, hoped-for creature? Merely for the sake of enhanced precision & elucidation, you understand. (Although, I do shudder to ask)

There iis no such thing as ” Libertarian-left Libertarian-socialism” shake your heads folks and think it through… Oil and water.

To add clarity, it would be a very good thing if this non-coercive mutuality were to exist as a much stronger factor, but the evidence is not there.
@leadingnorth - It would have to inhere in small units, like little communes, cooperatives, forms of kibbutz, etc. It would also be truly difficult for these to be sustainable & durable. The collaboration & synergy would have to be strongly trust-based, and they would have to trade with other entities in order to survive and obtain commodities which they themselves could not produce (pharma, medicaments, technology, etc.).
Then this would, of course, introduce the unavoidable, detested element of competition. The small combinations would have to do some things better than other bodies. So, yeah, probably an insurmountable challenge in the medium & long term.
