Capitalism as a system has spawned deepening economic crisis alongside its bought-and-paid-for political establishment. Neither serves the needs of our society. Whether it is secure, well-paid, and meaningful jobs or a sustainable relationship with the natural environment that we depend on, our society is not delivering the results people need and deserve.
One key cause for this intolerable state of affairs is the lack of genuine democracy in our economy as well as in our politics. The solution requires the institution of genuine economic democracy, starting with workers managing their own workplaces, as the basis for a genuine political democracy.
Here, Richard D. Wolff lays out a hopeful and concrete vision of how to make that possible, addressing the many people who have concluded economic inequality and politics as usual can no longer be tolerated and are looking for a concrete program of action.

“The solution requires the institution of genuine economic democracy, starting with workers managing their own workplaces, as the basis for a genuine political democracy.”
Old Bolshevik rhetoric.
The truth is human beings are not interchangeable.
Some people have talents that can make an organization successful and some don’t. Only those with no experience in the real world don’t get it. These books are written for the young.

Sounds like good old fashioned socialism. America is a Republic, not a ‘democracy. Socialism and Communism has failed in each country it has been tried in.
Lazy greedy people want socialism or communism because they think they’ll be getting money for nothing. Instead, everyone becomes equally destitute.
As Maggie Thatcher once commented “the trouble with socialism is that you inevitably run out of other people’s money.

No one pretends that democracy is perfect or all-wise. Indeed it has been said that democracy is the worst form of Government except for all those other forms that have been tried from time to time…

@ssafe05
He also said,
“He marks his ballot paper in strict secrecy, and then elected representatives and together decide what government, or even in times of stress, what form of government they wish to have in their country. If that is democracy, I salute it. I espouse it. I would work for it.”
Which actually describes a representative republic which the us is…

Spaniel1:
True Socialism has yet to be tried in any country. Also communism and socialism are different things, and communism while retaining some elements of capitalism but ran by the state (instead of the workers) morphed into Stalisnism. Part of the reason this even happened, which led to communisms morphing into something completely different than intended had to do with the fact that the U.S. Britain etc invaded Russia after the Russian Civil war out of fear of what would happen to the world if Communism was seen as an alternative to capitalism. Because of this it caused Russia to take a far more militant path than was intended, and then World War II happened and again, the militarized even more dragging them further from their original ideals.

The overwhelming majority of Millennials and Zoomers are far Left and friendly towards socialist ideologies. Which is great. The era of the corporate-plutocracy is coming to an end.

Here we go again. Same Lefts/Communist/SJW/Something for Nothing philosophy that has decimated societies throughout history. And, of course, this guy has a plan “to do it right this time”.
Wolff endorsed the Green Party candidate for President, in 2016, who received 1.02% (or less) of the popular vote, and no electoral votes.
As a comparison, Keith Russell Judd, aka Inmate No. 11593-051, won 41 percent of the vote in the 2012 Democratic primary in West Virginia. At the time, Judd was an inmate at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Beaumont, Texas, where he was serving a 210-month prison sentence for extortion.
Read a milk carton. More useful, and truthful information.

Every time it fails (which is every time) it must be expunged from the record, or labelled as a capitalist plot. Now that’s successful conditioning.
If you have to build a massive wall & a corresponding authoritarian apparatus to keep the prisoners of your Utopia from escaping; concentration camps & a secret police to control the happy population; and every other instrument of coercive repression; then what you’ve hit on is clearly some species of political/social/economic alchemy. Your ideology has discovered the philosophers’ stone, in all sooth!
These regimes have themselves and their toxic ideology to blame for their immediate recourse to brutal repression - and no one else. Marx wrote & spoke of the necessity of extreme violence. He also used the terms socialism & communism interchangeably. The continuum of oppressive state control/slavery/terror is the same. Our political systems manifestly have serious problems - a democratic deficit, lack of accountability, and a political class incapable of moral leadership in times of crisis (they know who they are) being particularly glaring examples (but let’s not mention beleaguered Hong Kong right now…)
The solution is probably not the most murderous ideology in human history.

Albert Einstein: “Why Socialism” for all the “economic geniuses” here. Denmark, Sweden…successful democratic socialism

None of the European states are socialist, because it would be fatal for our economies. My country, and the rest of the EU, incentivise investment & entrepreneurial activity in the market. Consequently, we can tax capital and redirect revenue and resources into health (the biggest expenditure), education & social programmes. This is not socialism. It’s market capitalism with a welfare component. But the balance has to be a delicate one. Overtaxation = capital flight (even the word “socialism” would scare off investment). It does function, but costs always increase & there is a tremendous amount of waste which govt is reluctant to tackle.

Lies and gaslighting.
“but, but, northern european states are socialist!”
No, they have a social net that works because they are high-trust societies, with a culture of reciprocal social behavior.
Try that “high trust” strategy in Detroit, Baltimore, or St. Louis. Talk about tragedy of the commons, only worse because you’re sharing the “commons” with high time preference, low impulse control fellow “humans”.
but nevermind that, continue preaching your utopian ideals from the comfort of your cushy suburban cul-de-sac.

Sweden is NOT a socialist country. It is a Capitalist country with ridiculously high taxes. Which it is changing as we speak.
And, due to “multiculturalism” its crime rate is soaring, its economy is in deep trouble, and all are suffering. Integration w/out assimilation will lead to failure. Forced “diversity” accomplishes very little, and creates serious problems.
Is China or Japan racist countries due to their lack of “diversity”? What would you say to them?

It’s always funny when people say that the USSR ‘failed.’
In 1917, Russia was an economic backwater where tens of millions of people lived in abject poverty, while a handful of people owned most of the land.
In the space of fifty years Russia went through two World Wars, a revolution and a civil war. Despite that, the USSR managed to lift tens of millions out of poverty and became a political and scientific super power. They created widespread property ownership and offered free general education to everyone. Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin even flew the first manned orbit around the Earth.
Yes, the USSR was far behind the West economically when it collapsed, just as it had been before 1917, and just as it is today, 30 years post-communism. But for the millions of people who were finally able to send their children to school, the USSR experiment was a marked improvement over the lives of previous generations.
The lessons we’ve learned from it - such as the ineffectiveness of Central Planning - have helped to evolve socialist thought, so that we’re able to try new approaches going forward.
Capitalism isn’t working for the majority of people in the world. Its proponents admit that it has problems, but say that it’s the best system we’ve got. Well, why not keep experimenting with new economic and governmental systems until we find a better one? The USSR was one attempt. Now let’s dust ourselves off and try again.
