New Yorker staff writer Michael Specter has twice won the Global Health Council’s Excellence in Media Award, as well as the Science Journalism Award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
In Denialism, he fervently argues that people are turning away from new technologies and engaging in a kind of magical thinking that is hindering scientific progress.
Denialists replace the rigorous and open-minded skepticism of science with the inflexible certainty of ideological commitment.
Denialism is denial writ large—when an entire segment of society, often struggling with the trauma of change, turns away from reality in favor of a more comfortable lie. It comes in many forms, and they often overlap.
Denialists draw direct relationships where none exist—between childhood vaccinations, for example, and the rising incidence of diseases like diabetes, asthma, and autism. They conflate similar but distinct issues and treat them as one—blending the results of different medical studies on the same topic, or confusing a general lack of trust in pharmaceutical companies with opposition to the drugs they manufacture and even to the very idea of science.
Unless data fits neatly into an already formed theory, a denialist doesn’t really see it as data; it’s dismissed as ‘just another point of view’. Instead, denialists invoke logical fallacies to buttress unshakable beliefs.

Now when I was a lad, we used to call ‘irrational thinking’ ’stupidity’.

pryderi, when you were a “lad”, you were a little light in the your little loafers just as you turned out to be very light on intellect later on. Your poor mother. You are a massive tool.

@solarsmurph. Science IS asking questions. Denialism is lying to negate science that you don’t like.
People who are “just asking questions” usually are pushing conspiracy theories without any proof.

Hard to believe the Asimov piece was written in 1980. It reads like it was ripped from today’s headlines. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose proven for the 1.3 billionth time.
