Publisher’s Summary
Sir Peter Ustinov’s beautifully crafted autobiography is told with exquisite wit and insight. From his birth in April 1921, it spans his extraordinary career as actor, playwright, film star, and director, confirming his early belief that he is ‘irrevocably betrothed to laughter’. Ustinov’s renowned gift for mimicry is exploited to the full in Dear Me. Eccentric relatives, school masters, sergeant majors, and manic Hollywood moguls are all brought unforgettably to life. “In the Spirit of Ustinov!”
I enjoyed the voices and perspectives of Ustinov as he leads us from his birth and childhood to adulthood. It allowed me to appreciate the influences and family background that lead to him being such a fine raconteur (all, naturally, told through vignette anicdotes!).
I’m a fan of Ustinov performances - particularly his pleasure in having an audience and ‘upping’ his game to match the reaction. This reading doesn’t have that element, so is somewhat subdued for it.
Still enjoyable and informative.
“Such a shame”
For such an interesting person as Peter Ustinov was, it is amazing his publisher’s allowed such a lifeless, and unstructured ramblings to go out. Obviously he was better in the telling of short stories than this rather long self-story.
“Classsic Ustinov”
The great whitt and racontour that is Peter Ustinov shines through in this reconting of varioussections of his life.Beginning (Of course) with his birth, Peter leads us through his school and movie life using anecdotes from the highs and lows of the time in a way only Mr ustinov knows.
Beautifully told.
“A curate’s egg”
I was looking forward to listening to this book; the combination of Peter Ustinov’s wit, fascinating life and peerless raconteur seemed unbeatable. I did enjoy it but not as much as I thought I would. The abridgment was rather too short for my liking making for quite big jumps in continuity; the balance of humour, seriousness and his up and down life did not really gel with me; and whilst he reads his book well, bringing characters brilliantly to life in dialogue, it was as another reviewer has commented a bit subdued and oddly lacking in color. I’ve listened to similar books by William Shatner and Clive James both of whom are much better tellers of their own story.
So recommended but only three stars for me.
