In this provocative history of contemporary debates over evolution, veteran journalist Tom Bethell depicts Darwin’s theory as a 19th-century idea past its prime, propped up by logical fallacies, bogus claims, and empirical evidence that is all but disintegrating under an onslaught of new scientific discoveries. Bethell presents a concise yet wide-ranging tour of the flash points of modern evolutionary theory, investigating controversies over common descent, natural selection, the fossil record, biogeography, information theory, evolutionary psychology, artificial intelligence, and the growing intelligent design movement.
Bethell’s account is enriched by his own personal encounters with of some of our era’s leading scientists and thinkers, including Harvard biologists Stephen Jay Gould and Richard Lewontin; British paleontologist Colin Patterson; and renowned philosopher of science Karl Popper.

“Tom Bethell is a senior editor at American Spectator, “media fellow” at the Hoover Institution, and purveyor of just about every brand of wingnut pseudoscience you can name.
His ultimate anti-science manifesto is the Politically Incorrect Guide to Science (PIGS), a book-length exudation promoting intelligent design, AIDS denial, stem cell myths, anti-environmentalism (mostly concentrating on global warming denial, the classic DDT and Rachel Carson canards, the crank version of radiation hormesis, and claiming that endangered species aren’t really endangered), and cancer quackery. The book is exceptional in that one could easily use the thing as a whole as well as each individual chapter to play some form of crank bingo or a skeptical drinking game”

I thought I might find you here, andyinmanch. Thanks though for the info and link for Tom Bethell. I can only wonder what qualifications are required to be a senior editor at American Spectator as the publication could be renamed American Cynical-Doubters.

Is it really a debate if they’re just talking to themselves?
How come “creation” scientist always end up being phlebotomists and dental assistants?

“I can only wonder what qualifications are required to be a senior editor at American Spectator”
Having looked at their website, he’s not listed amongst ‘Core Editorial Staff’, nor in the rung below that ‘Notable Authors’, nor the one below that ‘Contributing Editors’. The only way to find him is in the alphabetical list of all authors, where his bio again calls him a senior editor. Although he only seems to contribute an article every few years, and doesn’t seem to edit anything.

Food for thought: Darwin doubted his own theories. It’s too bad the school system has brained washed Darwin theories into so many minds as ‘gospel’. It’s also too bad that so many people have closed their minds to this debate. Here is one link I easily found on the net. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/charles-darwin-confessions/ I’ve also seen a documentary on Darwin’s personal notebook. Where he explains his “Darwin’s theory” on one page, but on another page he needs to find evidence to support it. It is my hope that you look over both sides of this debate and make up your own mind, and don’t go to either side blindly.

Mommy, I suggest you listen to the TTC series “What Darwin Didn’t Know”.
Biology has advanced a lot since the 1800s.
Biology has left Darwin behind like electrical engineering has left Ben Franklin behind, but electricity and evolution remain.
If an attack on Darwin is used as a proxy to attack modern understanding of evolution, the tactic is either disingenuous or misinformed.
I look forward to listening to this book though, I try to never become complacent and fall into confirmation bias.

I second the suggestion for the TTC series “What Darwin Didn’t Know”.
