In this explosive new book, Sam Harris tears down the wall between scientific facts and human values, arguing that most people are simply mistaken about the relationship between morality and the rest of human knowledge. Harris urges us to think about morality in terms of human and animal well-being, viewing the experiences of conscious creatures as peaks and valleys on a “moral landscape”.

Yes! Thank you so much, been looking for this lately!

Cool, but facts and values are discrete, one determines and evaluates the weight and worth of the other, normatively. We can’t derive an ought from an is.
But, cool upload, all the same!

One wonders why it took thousands of years before the institution of slavery was outlawed by a worldwide empire that not only prohibited slavery but used its blood and treasure to enforce the decision.
One wonders whether - overwhelming the effect of the misbehaviour of many individuals involved - the weight of Christian Morality did not play a huge part …

Value is “A broad tendency to prefer certain states of affairs over others.” Because our values are programmed early in our lives, values are non-rational (although we may subjectively feel ours to be perfectly rational!). In fact, values determine our subjective definition of rationality. Furthermore, values form value systems or hierarchies that need not be in a state of harmony: Most people simultaneously hold several conflicting values, such as “freedom” and “equality.” Cannot see how science can handle (or be concerned with) the likes of this incongruity, and, rationally “determine” values.

In that case, marco… read on. That’s just what Sam is attempting to do. Pretty convincingly as well.

“Sam has a particular set of skills…” However, science gives us facts, not morality. We must evaluate those facts using Natural Law. Always stimulating to read this kind of stuff, but the utilitarian-style model he supports is ethically impoverished (the greatest happiness for a tribe of cannibals is to eat you. You can present this flaw in innumerable manifestations. The moral content/structure is sorely lacking).
Kant’s deontological ethics bring us closer to where we want to be - but he was merely giving us old wine in new bottles.
Often, when wise-Sam (et al) tries to spirit up a wholly “new” system of morality - crucially independent of religion, of course - it turns out to look suspiciously like Christianity-lite, with the pesky theism deleted. Fewer ethical obligations, naturally, as they centre it around the self and solipsistic appetites.
And I’m all like, woah there Beelzebub! Attribute your sources correctly (and honestly)!
