A fresh and insightful history of how the German arts-and-letters scene was transformed under the Nazis.
Culture was integral to the smooth running of the Third Reich. In the years preceding WWII, a wide variety of artistic forms were used to instill a Nazi ideology in the German people and to manipulate the public perception of Hitler’s enemies. During the war, the arts were closely tied to the propaganda machine that promoted the cause of Germany’s military campaigns.
Michael H. Kater’s engaging and deeply researched account of artistic culture within Nazi Germany considers how the German arts-and-letters scene was transformed when the Nazis came to power. With a broad purview that ranges widely across music, literature, film, theater, the press, and visual arts, Kater details the struggle between creative autonomy and political control as he looks at what became of German artists and their work both during and subsequent to Nazi rule.

Expect a lot of book-burning to the soundtrack of Wagner’s Götterdämmerung. Hitler loved Clark Gable and western movies. Scenes from the Nazi’s Titanic movie (which was infused with anti-capitalist and antisemitic propaganda) were subsequently incorporated into A Night to Remember.
Thanks cubed, notonthat!

I was just at the Chicago Art Institute and spent an hour in the gift shop reading this over! I’m so glad the audiobook is up, this is an amazing analytical piece on the less-talked over aspect of the Nazi regimes artistic and cultural implications. It pairs well with the Gobbels biography in an overall history of the third reich’s perversion of the 20th century artscape- https://audiobookbay.lu/audio-books/goebbels-a-biography-peter-longerich/

Some years back I attended a re-collection of items from the Entartete Kunst.
Let’s just say the Nazi’s had great taste in what they despised as “degenerate” art.

They weren’t overly keen on jazz either. I read that over 20% of European art was looted by the regime - so they did have some definite aesthetic preferences - much of it remains unaccounted for.

I’ll take Carmina Burana any day over Götterdämmerung, thank you.
Speaking of Jazz, I remember being in Tokyo not that long ago, and saw a club called Tina’s, which still advertised itself as “filled with Black Music”.

Carmina Burana would just give you the urge to pull the sword from the stone, whereas Götterdämmerung might make you want to invade Poland (or vote for Nigel Farage, whichever is easier/closer).
The Japanese seem to be doing their bit (the barest minimum) for harmonic racial relations.
A lot of our cultural traditions don’t seem to travel all that well. A few years ago, a hotel in Cairo was welcoming its bemused Western guests at Christmas with Santa Claus nailed to a huge cross in the lobby. The nuances of yuletide custom had evidently escaped them.
